This is a haunting movie filled with imperfect people. Selfish people, bullies, victims, uncaring mothers and quite possibly a severely depressed man about 40 years late to his stardom. George Reeves had everything Hollywood wanted in a movie star, but not in the time he existed. In the 1930-1945 he would have been a mega-star, boiler-plate plunked into every cookie cutter Hollywood rehash of the same tired old tropes. But in his lifetime he was stuck in the doldrums of television, which in the late ‘50s and ‘60s was a graveyard for has-beens and “never have beens”. He had big dreams that faded fast, like they do for 90% of the people who venture into that environment. There people are used and discarded like yesterday’s newspaper without so much as an after-thought. People are products in this landscape - used, abused, exploited and run through every wringer in every possible way. This movie paints several sad tales of what might have happened with Reeves. Was he suicidal? Was he killed by a jealous ex-lover, or perhaps a selfish younger girlfriend who never quite understood him? Was he put down by a Hollywood heavy hitter, someone with money, a dark past and plenty of reasons and capabilities to carry out a hit? Affleck does a decent job of painting the many faces of his character, lending to the mystery of what might have really happened. Adrian Brody takes us through the many versions of this event as a fictional detective who has his own problems, yet it’s done in a very convincing and heartfelt way. This is no thrown together hash of off-the-wall theories, it’s an interesting story of many flawed people interacting within the Hollywood environment of exploitation and selfishness.
