I remember watching this from home and having the crap scared out of me during that *SPOILER* one scene with the mom floating on the ceiling. Not only does it excel in its scariness, but has excellent acting, writing, everything.

Given the brutality of these experiences and how they are captured, Ari Aster either turned his personal experience into a screen story, imagined such grievous trauma in his mind, or combined both truth and fiction. Hereditary is very often a hard watch, but it always feels honest.
- tellum18. august 2025I did not enjoy this as much as other horror fans, for me it was very plodding and the ending I didn’t care for. But there is some very disturbing imagery that is burned in my brain, and relatable realistic terror as well as supernatural terror. For bigger fans of the genre this is still a good movie.
- halflingmarquee1. maj 2026This is the kind of movie that will be considered a classic for decades to come. It's thrilling, terrifying, while also at times beautiful and heartbreaking. Watching the family torn apart by trauma and pain is fascinating and keeps the viewer interested until the extreme horror moments occur. This is a movie I've been planning to rewatch for a long time now but I really need to also be in the right headspace.

The explanation is inexplicable. The result is multitonal, a partly comical fever dream dressed in visual discomfort. Yet the dread lingers past the runtime. Every scene holds attention. But the real artists were Steve Newburn and his team creating all those miniatures.
