Yeah... hot take incoming. I've seen this musical both live and in movie form, I don't really care for either. The constant rapping and tidal wave of historical references seems to encourage repeat viewings to fully get the picture, but a real narrative never really seems to materialize beyond a disparate group of scenes played in sequence. Ultimately it'll never live up to the complexity and intrigue of the real history, and it won't be able to tell Ham's story better than a standard biopic or documentary format can.

Just as amazing on the big screen as I hoped it could be. It really made me appreciate how incredible of an actress Philipa Soo is. Her ability to really emote in the small moments as well as the big ones absolutely shined.

I just watched Hamilton on Disney+, and I give it 2 out of 5 stars. I know this one is huge, and a lot of people absolutely love it. I went in open minded, ready to finally see what all the hype was about, but honestly, it just did not click with me. I can respect the talent and creativity behind it, but as a whole, it just was not for me. It felt more like something I was sitting through than something I was enjoying. First off, I have to say the performances are impressive. The cast is clearly talented, and everyone is giving it everything they have. Lin-Manuel Miranda brings a lot of energy to the lead role, and he definitely has a style. Daveed Diggs stood out the most for me — he brought charisma and speed to every scene he was in. Leslie Odom Jr., Renée Elise Goldsberry, and Phillipa Soo all have strong voices and stage presence too. You can tell this was a well rehearsed, passionate performance from everyone involved. The way the show is filmed is also pretty cool. It is not just a locked-off shot of the stage. The camera moves in, shifts perspectives, and gives you views you would never get in a live theater. It feels cinematic even though it is clearly a stage production. The lighting, choreography, and timing all come together in a smooth, professional way. But for me, that is kind of where it stops. I had a really hard time connecting with the story or the way it was told. The nonstop rapping and singing got overwhelming fast. I like music in movies and shows, but this felt like it never gave me a break to breathe. It felt like the pace was always cranked up, and it made it hard to settle into any one moment or feel anything deeply. I get that it is part of the style, but it wore me out after a while. The lyrics are packed with references, wordplay, and dense history — and that can be cool — but it also made it tough to follow. A lot of times I felt like I was just trying to catch up, like I was watching something I was supposed to study first to really understand. It became more about trying to keep up than actually getting invested in the characters or their relationships. There were moments that had emotional weight, but they were buried in all the constant motion and rapid fire lyrics. I also just did not connect with the historical angle. It felt like the show wanted to modernize history, which I get, but it ended up feeling like style over substance. There is so much going on visually and musically that the actual story of Alexander Hamilton gets lost at times. I never really felt like I got to know the person — just a version of him that fit the rhythm. I give Hamilton 2 out of 5 stars because while it is clearly a creative and well executed production, it just did not land for me. It felt overwhelming, hard to connect with, and more exhausting than entertaining. Overall Hamilton is something a lot of people love, and I respect what it tried to do, but it is just not my thing. I watched it once, but I do not think I will be watching it again.
