- SpikyCactusJuly 26, 2026Top badass moment? Despite this being a musical about a group of lazy, dope and LSD taking hippies with an obsession with Manchester, England, the weirdly sentimental end showing the power of friendship is really quite profound. This movie was a disappointment from its very first frame. As someone who’s become follically challenged in his dotage, I found it disturbing, insulting and degrading to have all these long-hair hippies flaunting their locks at me at every opportunity. Why this isn’t against the law is bewildering. What’s the point of woke if it won’t even stick up for those of us who need protection from arrogant, heated curler-wielding, long-haired lackies and their evil, hairdresser and barber masters? We live in a sad, sick world. The plot is basically the previously mentioned group of hippies corrupting a decent, honest, upright citizen, who’s off to do his civic duty in the army and protect America from evil commies halfway around the world. The counterculture, free love bollocks was just techo-speak for lazy, annoying, can’t be arsed youth with frustrated and rich parents, who would rather decimate wild flower populations by picking and stuffing them in their offensively long hair, than do anything productive. Thank goodness punk came along when it did and created a proper alternative with better music, hair and drugs. There’s also some posh, horse-riding bird who inexplicably seemed to like them. To be honest I’m not quite sure what the point of her being there was, other than to get topless a few times. The Age of Aquarius, what a load of astrological nonsense, they can't even decide when it starts and finishes. Thank goodness acoustic guitars and folk songs were in short supply. They should have wised up, shaved their hair off and started listening to some decent reggae. But despite everything, it's actually a decent film! Occasionally it reminded me of “Pinball Wizard”. Technically it fine, the plot (what there is of it) sort of exists somewhere amongst all the singing and dancing, the script’s limited (it’s like buying the cheapest model of a family car) and the acting’s up to spec. The singing and dancing, especially at the garden party, is actually pretty good. No cats, chainsaws or decapitations.
