Griffin in Summer Ratings & Reviews
Kevin Ward
July 1, 2025
Griffin in Summer is a sharp little coming-of-age indie that sees Griffin (Erick Blunck), a 14-year-old theater kid who takes himself way too seriously, convinced his angsty plays are profound while everyone else just sees them as overblown. At home, his mom (Melanie Lynskey) is overwhelmed, and when she hires Owen Teague as Brad, a 25-year-old artist/poolboy, Griffin’s casual interest quickly turns into a full-on summer obsession. Writer-director Nicholas Colia tracks Griffin’s spiral, pulling laughs from his single-mindedness while letting the awkwardness of his infatuation linger. Kathryn Newton pops up as Brad’s clingy girlfriend, hilariously undercutting Griffin’s big romantic fantasies (and stealing every scene she’s in along the way). Whether you see Griffin as a hopeless romantic or just a self-absorbed theater kid, Blunck nails both sides at once. Charming and funny, in equal measure.

A really promising feature directorial debut... The casting is so spot on. It's such a top-notch ensemble.
48 Hills
Dennis Harvey
Writer-director Nicholas Colia's debut feature is a sharp comedy with bittersweet aspects and some emotional depth -- though like everyone around him, viewers may have a hard time getting past just how insufferable Griffin is.
One Guy's Opinion
Frank Swietek
A gay coming-of-age film played largely as a cartoon until it turns serious toward the close, with the focus on a fourteen-year old boy you'll find either endearingly precocious or incredibly irritating.
Casey's Movie Mania
Casey Chong
Nicholas Colia's debut feature effectively combines laughs and drama in his solid indie coming-of-age story.
Boston Hassle
Kyle Amato
Griffin in Summer is a gay Bildungsroman that is vital representations for anyone who used to be a grating theater kid with big dreams unaware of how his words and actions affect those around him.
Reeling Reviews
Laura Clifford
Colia's screenplay intricately weaves the impact of outside events on various relationships to propel this unique coming-of-age comedy, 'Regrets of Autumn' a comedic mini-masterpiece of adult drama seen through the eyes of a child.
Common Sense Media
Monique Jones
This coming-of-age comedy hilariously showcases the awkwardness of teenage first love.

Brian Orndorf
Colia handles these swings of intensity reasonably well. He also has a charming lead in Everett Blunck, who does an amazing job with a tricky character.
Screen Zealots
Louisa Moore
While the repetitive jokes sometimes overstay their welcome, the film shines as a witty and sincere portrait of youthful ambition, first love, and the messy magic of growing up.
Cinemalogue
Todd Jorgenson
As a heartfelt tribute to surviving adolescent awkwardness, this coming-of-age comedy overcomes its predictability and tonal inconsistency with sincerity and charm.

[Writer/director Nicholas] Colia knows that all of his protagonist's eccentricities and efforts to appear mature stem from some budding pain and loneliness.
The Queer Gaze (Podcast)
Joe Lipsett
An exceedingly funny, but surprisingly deep film that features an exceptional lead performance from newcomer Everett Blunck.
Wall Street Journal
Zachary Barnes
It sees its premise stretched thin and undermined by an amateurish construction. But the commitment of the cast and a handful of good comic ideas keep the proceedings watchable and amusing.
New York Times
Chris Azzopardi
The writer-director Nicholas Colia infuses his feature debut with sensitivity and the sweet awkwardness of youth.
Bay Area Reporter
Brandon Judell
Nicholas Colia might well be the greatest living gay, Boston-raised director and screen writer America has ever cultivated. There's no guarantee. After all, he's only made one feature and several shorts. But what a feature!
Geek Vibes Nation
Cameron Ritter
The beauty of Griffin in Summer lies in its simplicity. No one part oversteps and takes over from the rest. The writing is great, it looks wonderful, and it has a charming score.
Cinematic Words of a Chaotic Gemini (Substack)
Matthew St. Clair
Through slight humor and distress, Griffin in Summer effectively navigates painful truths about adolescence and is a promising feature directorial debut from writer/director Nicholas Colia.
Movies We Texted About
Connor Lightbody
an unremarkable and awkward comedy that is tonally inverted on itself, with a lead character that is almost unbearable. For what charm the cast can muster, the character of Griffin is at war with the script as well as his impending puberty
The Hollywood Reporter
Lovia Gyarkye
Blunck is an arresting presence. He balances Griffin's intensity and know-it-all attitude with unexpected moments of typical adolescent insecurity.
