Really liked how different this is from the usual Tarzan story. It takes its time showing him growing up with the apes and then dealing with the completely different world he comes from, which gives the character more depth than I expected. The jungle scenes look fantastic, and the ape performances are surprisingly convincing. Christopher Lambert is probably the best I’ve ever seen him, and Ralph Richardson is fantastic too. Ian Holm is also great, and the whole cast gives the movie a much more serious tone than you normally get with Tarzan. It does take a little too long to get where it’s going, though. I could easily see 20–25 minutes being cut, especially from the slower sections after Tarzan leaves the jungle. The movie gets quite heavy on the whole clash between civilization and the life he grew up with, and some of that works better than other parts. Still, I appreciate that it doesn't just give us another basic Tarzan adventure. It looks great, has some excellent performances and does something genuinely different with the character. Definitely uneven, but I enjoyed it.
