Michael Caine is an absolute evil bastard in this, and he's surrounded by a menagerie of low life scum. It's an unrelenting film, that wears it's humour jet black. And such a downbeat, bleak ending. What a great movie, an absolute classic.

In fact, none of the characters in the film are particularly likable or good.
