Ben Wheatley leans into the messiness of real panic rather than the polish of action spectacle, letting confusion, bad aim, and stubborn pride drive the chaos. As a long-time fan of Cillian Murphy, finally seeing him in an A24 film felt like two of my favorite creative worlds colliding, and he brings a steady, understated authority that anchors the ensemble. Sharlto Copley turns incompetence into a kind of deranged charisma, while Brie Larson and Armie Hammer slip into the film’s jagged rhythm with a natural ease that keeps the shifting alliances lively. The warehouse becomes a stage for people who are far less capable than they pretend to be, and watching their bravado crumble is half the fun. The film’s limitation is baked into its design. There are only so many directions a single extended shootout can go, and at times the story loops back on itself rather than finding new corners to explore. But the cast keeps the momentum alive, and Wheatley’s commitment to the bit gives the film a strange, scrappy charm that never wears thin. Free Fire isn’t trying to reinvent the action genre or smuggle in a grand thesis about violence. It’s a movie that knows exactly what it is, executes its idea with confidence, and trusts the audience to enjoy the messy unpredictability of it all. In a catalog known for ambition and eccentricity, its straightforwardness becomes the thing that makes it stand out. It’s the rare action film that understands the joke isn’t in the gunfire, but in the people holding the guns, and the punchline lands with a bruised honesty that lingers long after the smoke clears.

- Richard Thornton19. august 2025A pretty good cast kinda wasted on a pretty weak script. Good costume work but they forgot the final important piece to sell the 1970s movie look which to make everyone’s skin super shiny for some unknown reason. Perhaps it was the heat from old lighting.

This was a very Tarantino-esque attempt depicting two gangs (mob style, not thug style) set in the 70s being holed up in a warehouse, and end up in a gun fight for survival. The entire movie takes place in a confined space, which lends to the atmosphere. At times, it seemed so cramped and I wondered how in the world they weren't actually getting shot (if you watch it, you'll see what I mean). The characters themselves also help in making the movie work since without giving a crap about them, this movie wouldn't have much going for it. The quality dialogue carried the movie more than the gunfights, since that is the focus. I am not surprised the USA audience didn't get much into this, only because of the type of movie it is, and didn't say "Quentin" anywhere in it. Shame since it was pretty entertaining, and didn't drag itself out as well.
- John Chapel28. februar 2025Generally, my stars are reserved to measure the one thing that I think universally makes a good movie: rewatchability. Thats it. There's nothing particularly special about this movie. Its an arms deal gone bad, taking place in real time over the course of 2 hours or so, and the backstory of the characters comes through in the dialogue during the firefight. What can I say? its a fun mindless interesting little watch. I've watched it 4 times now, so it gets 4 stars. I'd give it 5 but lets be honest, its not a perfect movie.
