- DoggesAndCattesApril 18, 2025A moderately enjoyable and incredibly easy film to watch, but make sure to say "Brain off" because it isn't a very coherent experience.
- Manuel FrangisMarch 24, 2025I just watched Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer again and I give it 4.5 out of 5 stars. This sequel does not get the credit it deserves. It takes everything fun from the first movie and adds in one of the coolest characters from the comics. It is still lighthearted and full of early 2000s superhero energy but it also adds some higher stakes and bigger moments that make it a really fun watch. The cast from the first movie returns and they still work really well together. Ioan Gruffudd as Reed Richards is more confident this time around and it is cool to see his character grow. Jessica Alba brings more emotion and power as Sue Storm and you can tell her role is more central to the story this time. Michael Chiklis as Ben Grimm is still one of the best parts of the team with his grumpy attitude and solid heart. And once again Chris Evans steals the show as Johnny Storm. His energy and one liners make every scene better. But the big new addition here is the Silver Surfer and he is awesome. He looks great, moves smoothly through the sky, and brings a sense of mystery and power that totally fits the tone of the movie. The visual effects for him still look cool and his scenes are some of the best in the whole film. The way he interacts with the team and the larger threat he represents raises the tension without taking away the fun. The story is simple but it works. Strange events are happening around the world and the Fantastic Four are brought in to figure it out. They soon discover the source of the problem and it leads to a global threat that only they can stop. The stakes are higher this time but the tone still stays fun and comic book like which I really liked. The action scenes are bigger and better than the first movie. There are cool new uses of the team’s powers especially Johnny who really gets to show off this time. The chases with the Silver Surfer are fast and exciting and every battle feels like it matters. Even the humor during the action works and keeps it from getting too serious. Doctor Doom also returns and while his role is different this time he still brings that slick energy that makes him fun to watch. He is always scheming and you are never quite sure what side he is on. It adds a fun twist to the plot without taking too much focus away from the Surfer. The pacing is solid. It never feels slow and moves quickly from scene to scene. There is just enough time for character moments without dragging things out. The movie knows what it wants to be and delivers on that without trying to be something else. The reason I give it 4.5 out of 5 stars is because while it is not a perfect superhero film it is a really fun one. It brings in a cool new character, gives the team more to do, and delivers fun action and effects without losing its charm. Overall Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer is an underrated sequel that is better than people remember. It is fast, fun, full of heart, and a great ride from start to finish. I had a great time rewatching it and I still think it holds up really well.
