Familiar Touch Ratings & Reviews
- Kevin WardJune 30, 2025In Familiar Touch, Kathleen Chalfant gives a beautifully understated performance as Ruth, a former chef with early-stage dementia adjusting to life in assisted living. I loved the scenes where Ruth reconnects to her cooking—especially when she walks her doctor through her borscht recipe, clinging to it as proof of independence, even as the cracks begin to show. There’s a quiet grace when the staff lets her run the kitchen like it’s her own restaurant—a small act of kindness that carries deep emotional weight. H. Jon Benjamin is excellent as Ruth’s son Steve, especially in the opening, where Ruth mistakes his visit for a date. It’s never said aloud that he’s her son, but the way Benjamin plays it—mildly amused, slightly flustered, quietly heartbroken—tells you everything. As tender as it is honest, Familiar Touch is a moving reflection on memory, identity, and the fleeting comfort of holding on to what slips away.
