- MrTrivetJanuary 20, 2026A Japanese take on the concept of backdoors, it’s an adaptation of a video game I haven’t played, yet it stands strongly on its own. The narrative is gamified, often shifting between first- and third-person perspectives, with action structured around repeated activities that feel akin to the curiosity-driven language of video games. It could have been tedious, but the filmmakers maintain a careful balance between mystery, horror, and drama. I especially appreciated the two main threads: social indifference, and the anxiety surrounding parenthood, particularly from a male perspective. The cinematography and pacing make moments that might have felt mechanical immersive and tense. It’s engaging, thoughtful, and consistently compelling - a rare case of a film based on a game that works brilliantly as cinema, and I’m now curious to explore the game itself to see how much of this comes from the source material versus sheer cinematic skill.
