Definitely stupid, but there is some fun to be had here. The things with the horse was funny, Jack black in general was great, and also this movie was pretty well shot. There is plenty of unfunny scenes, some scenes go on for to long and the plot is scatters all over the place. Also some ad libbing was pretty bad and the cgi is trashnow. Still I found this to be a decent watch but only because of liking Jack Black and having memories of seeing this when I was younger.
Seattle Times
Moira MacDonald
Wrenchingly unfunny.
Detroit News
Tom Long
Envy is not something you should feel for anyone who happens to see Envy. Pity, in truth, would be more appropriate.
San Francisco Chronicle
Mick LaSalle
The film is neither fish nor fowl nor some arresting new entity, but a lumpish coagulation of conflicting impulses and unrealized gestures.
Denver Post
Lisa Kennedy
Far too much of it is unfunny.
Houston Chronicle
Bruce Westbrook
A labored misfire.
New York Post
Jonathan Foreman
An embarrassingly unfunny black comedy.
New York Daily News
Jami Bernard
A mean-spirited black comedy saturated with dog-poo jokes and only intermittent yowls of mirth.
Austin Chronicle
Marc Savlov
Envy's horrid mix of poorly done black comedy and the incessant striving to be zany by Black, Stiller, and former Upright Citizens Brigade member Poehler makes Death to Smoochy look like a masterpiece of comic nuance.
Common Sense Media
Nell Minow
It's a long, long time between chuckles.
Chicago Reader
Jonathan Rosenbaum
With so many dubious elements at play, even the half-good ideas get lost in the shuffle.
Associated Press
Anthony Breznican
Envy crawls to its finish through a minefield of poor taste and comedic misfires.
Village Voice
J. Hoberman
Ultimately more amusing than hilarious, and sometimes less than that.
Ebert & Roeper
Richard Roeper
... one of the worst comedies I've ever seen.
Washington Post
Sara Gebhardt
For an alleged comedy with such star power, Envy reeks enough to wish there was a vaporizer that would make it magically disappear.
Washington Post
Ann Hornaday
One of those cinematic curiosities that almost always fade quickly.
Variety
Robert Koehler
Envy can't decide whether to be an eccentric black comedy or a middle-of-the-road diversion.
Chicago Sun-Times
Roger Ebert
The movie is funny, yes, but not really funny enough.
Boston Globe
Ty Burr
A weirdly airless disaster.
Detroit Free Press
John Monaghan
A movie desperate for laughs.
