Enter the Clones of Bruce Ratings & Reviews

You’ve heard of Blaxploitation and Grindhouse, but have you ever heard of Bruceploitation? Enter the Clones of Bruce is a wildly entertaining documentary that dives headfirst into the bizarre and fascinating subgenre that emerged after the untimely death of Bruce Lee. When the martial arts legend passed, studios rushed to fill the void he left behind, churning out a slew of kung fu movies with Bruce Lee lookalikes and soundalikes. This is their story. The documentary captures the absurdity and ingenuity of an industry scrambling to capitalize on the Bruce Lee phenomenon. It’s packed with humor and jaw-dropping anecdotes, exploring how studios blurred the lines between homage and exploitation. The film is both a love letter to the martial arts craze and a revealing commentary on how Hollywood—and global cinema—has always been quick to exploit a single idea when it shows profitability. What’s great about Enter the Clones of Bruce is its mix of reverence and irreverence. It doesn’t shy away from the sillier aspects of Bruceploitation (and trust me, there’s plenty of that), but it also highlights the incredible talent and passion of the actors who stepped into Bruce’s iconic shadow. It’s a fascinating piece of cinematic history that sheds light on an era of filmmaking that’s as ridiculous as it is entertaining. This film will be popular with fans of quirky documentaries like Electric Boogaloo: The Wild, Untold Story of Cannon Films or The Last Action Heroes, offering a hilarious and insightful look at how far the industry will go to keep a legend alive—whether he wants to be or not. Highly recommended for martial arts fans and anyone curious about the stranger side of cinema history!

An intriguing piece of socioeconomic analysis which explores a ruthless marketing machine gone completely off the rails.

Directed by David Gregory, a Severin co-founder, the film captures something of the chaotic energy of the grindhouse era, one that is interestingly balanced by the ambivalence, in some cases regret, that the stars have over their roles.
Cinema Crazed
Felix Vasquez Jr.
Both a fun retrospective of "Brucesploitation," and great, unbiased look at how Hollywood fetishized not only Bruce Lee, but Asians in general.
Cinapse
Dan Tabor
Clones is a hilariously informative and unconventional deep dive into one of the most bizarre sub-genres in action that manages to grab you with its look at the men chosen to possibly be the next Bruce Lee.
Culture Mix
Carla Hay
Enter the Clones of Bruce is a breezy and fascinating deep dive into Bruce Lee-inspired movies and actors who tried to continue the legacy of Lee after his tragic death. The movie's commentary is superb and includes some people who rarely give interviews.
ScullyVision
Dan Scully
The most remarkable aspect of this breezy and entertaining documentary is the variety of talking heads that the filmmakers were able to gather under one roof.
United Press International
Fred Topel
If nothing else, Enter the Clones points out the differences between movies that, on the surface, all look like the same thing. Some are actually more nuanced. Others are completely outrageous with 'Bruce' fighting gorillas and mummies.
ScreenCrush

If cult films appeal to you, there's no way to walk away from Enter the Clones of Bruce without a whole list of titles to track down.

Nathaniel Muir
Enter the Clones of Bruce also looks at the wide ranging influence of the actor, but in a completely different way. It is an often outrageous, but still sobering look at what could have been.
Midwest Film Journal
Evan Dossey
Enter the Clones of Bruce is pure pleasure for any fan of 1970s action cinema from Hong Kong or the surrounding countries, but it's also entertaining enough to serve as an introduction to the vast, off-kilter world of exploitation cinema.
The SS Ben Hecht
Stephen Silver
A hugely entertaining documentary that explores the oft-disreputable faux-Bruce Lee movies that followed the great star's death.
Book & Film Globe
William Schwartz
The story of what's actually a lot more relevant to the Bruce Lee legend than anything Bruce Lee himself ever actually did-the extent to which the entire Hong Kong film market transitioned to aggressively producing Bruce Lee ripoff films.
JoBlo's Movie Network
Chris Bumbray
A very entertaining look at one of the strangest exploitation movie trends of all time.
