After the losses of Pinocchio (1940) and Fantasia (1940), Disney had to make a cheaper cartoon to reduce the damage. They used a 1938 children’s book by Helen Aberson and Harold Pearl. It tells the story of Dumbo, a circus elephant born with very big ears. Even though the world laughs at him, he still manages to succeed and prove his bullies wrong. The original book had only a few pages. Because of this, Disney had to make the story much bigger. Still, with a running time of just over an hour, it is the shortest of all Disney classics. According to stories, it was also Walt Disney’s personal favorite. At its heart, Dumbo is a story about unconditional motherly love and perseverance. Dumbo’s mother only wants to love and protect her baby from the cruel outside world. When she is punished for this, Dumbo is helped by Timothy, a circus mouse. Suddenly Dumbo is all alone, because the other elephants reject him. But with Timothy’s clever ideas, and the support of a group of crows, Dumbo turns his “handicap” into his greatest strength. Dumbo was made with a small budget, so the animation is not as detailed or polished as other Disney films. But this gives the film a raw edge and allows it to focus more on the characters and story. This is one of the film’s real strengths. The movie is full of colorful and memorable scenes: Dumbo’s birth by the stork, funny slapstick in the circus ring, short but catchy songs, and of course the legendary, surreal “pink elephants” sequence. But most of all, the film touches the heart. Everyone feels for the little outsider who is treated badly but rises above it with the help of other outsiders. Both literally and figuratively. One of the most beautiful—if not the most beautiful—Disney stories. A heartwarming masterpiece!
