LAPD Sgt. Joe Friday -- the equally straight-laced nephew of the famous police sergeant of the same name -- is paired up with a young, freewheeling detective named Pep Streebeck. After investigating some strange robberies at the local zoo and the theft of a stockpile of pornographic magazines, they uncover cult activity in the heart of the city and are hot on the case to figure out who's behind it all.

Saw this one in cinema, because when Dan Aykroyd and Tom Hanks team up to spoof a stone faced TV cop show, you don’t wait for VHS. Aykroyd plays Sgt. Joe Friday, nephew of the original, delivering deadpan lines with surgical precision. Hanks is Pep Streebeck, the loose cannon partner who thinks rules are optional. Together, they investigate stolen zoo animals, missing porn mags and a pagan cult called P.A.G.A.N. that’s somehow tied to city corruption. Christopher Plummer plays Reverend Whirley with sinister charm and Dabney Coleman lisps his way through smut kingpin territory. The plot is bonkers, the tone swings between parody and genuine cop drama and the one liners come fast. The soundtrack slaps, the pacing is brisk and the whole thing feels like a love letter to procedural TV, with just enough absurdity to keep it fresh. I liked the impersonation, the cult nonsense and the way it made cinema nights feel goofy, satirical and slightly unhinged, with goat rituals, badge flashing bravado and a finale that’s pure 80's chaos.

It was good when I was a kid but I guess it doesn't really hold up anymore.

dragnet is by no means a great film. but it is a funny, goofy light hearted film that both actors play well. i thought it was unusual to see christopher plummer in such a movie but he was good as the founder of "mama". this wont go down as the best film of either tom hanks or dan akroyd.dan has the jack webb impersonation down well though. it still is entertaining and if you want a decent laugh it's worth renting.
