- Hakihiko7. juli 2026Punk Love and Bad Dinners "Dinner in America" is the kind of indie that sneaks up on you. It opens in full chaos mode, all rage and bad decisions and uncomfortable energy, and you spend the first twenty minutes genuinely unsure whether you're going to like it or anyone in it. Then, slowly, almost against your will, it pulls you in. Adam Rehmeier has made something that wears its rough edges as a badge of honor, a punk rock romance set against the crumbling backdrop of Midwestern suburbia that cares a lot more about its characters than it ever lets on. Kyle Gallner is the kind of performer who can make a genuinely difficult person feel magnetic without asking for your sympathy, and he walks that line constantly here. He's chaotic and self destructive and occasionally infuriating, but there's something real underneath it that Gallner earns slowly rather than announces up front. Emily Skeggs is the quiet revelation of the whole thing though, playing Patty with this specific mixture of vulnerability and unguarded weirdness that makes you root for her immediately and completely. The chemistry between the two of them is the film's real engine, odd and unlikely and oddly moving once it gets going. Visually it's scrappy by design, with a color palette that swings between the drab beige of suburban kitchens and the more vivid, chaotic pops of Patty's world. John Swihart's score and the punk tracks running through the film do a lot of emotional work, giving the whole thing a loose, propulsive energy that keeps you leaning forward even when the plot isn't particularly driving things forward. The writing is at its best in the smaller, stranger scenes, particularly anything involving a family dinner table, where the passive aggressive dysfunction is turned up to an almost cartoonish pitch that somehow stays grounded because the leads keep it honest. The film's deeper ideas about self invention, belonging, and what it actually means to be yourself around other people come through more in texture than in dialogue, which is exactly right for a film with this kind of personality. Where it wobbles slightly is in some of the messier supporting subplots, a couple of which feel scrappy in the less charming sense, and the more transgressive elements of Simon's behavior early on ask you to extend some fairly significant goodwill before the film has earned it. Still, there's a beating heart under all that noise, and "Dinner in America" earns the right to show it. One of those films that rewards patience in a way that genuinely surprises you.

- owenmcdiarmid20. november 2025I thought this was a great movie and a great feel good romance movie I liked all the plots I felt that there were no unnecessary scenes and I loved the cinematography especially during the final scene with their date and the shot of both of them it was beautiful I also really loved the ending it was great I would recommend giving it a watch if you haven’t already.
