Brandenburg, towards the end of the 19th century: an old-established aristocratic family finds itself on the threshold of old glory and modernity. Major von Poggenpuhl's widow and her sons and daughters eke out a rather poor existence. Nevertheless, family honor and a sense of status are upheld and maid Friederike dusts off the ancestral gallery every day. But ultimately everything revolves around the dear, non-existent money. Mrs. Major, who only ever has worries and has to save, is practiced in humility and confident in doing without. Her children, on the other hand, are each still living on the hope of a change in fortune. But nothing will change.
