The Brümmer's figure as a strange person often turns out to be a weirdo, if not always. Brümmer is a physically and socially disadvantaged contemporary, someone who has suffered greatly and has become harsh with his surroundings as a result.
But in this situation he does well, putting his own life at risk, Brümmer hides the deserter for long months until the end of the terrible war. At some point he needs the help of his friend Schickhörn, the scrap metal dealer. If he supported him, Brümmer promised the Schickhörn a thousand gold marks out of the millions he had long received from the King of Sweden. But at the end of the story he gives away the million to him. Why did he do that?
