- ricomckee16. srpna 2025Descendants is that very rare movie that succeeds on so many levels, it slightly defies the ability to place it into a genre, category, or even fully describe its impact. It is a low budget film that has elements of horror, alien abduction, and drama. However, all of that is dressing for a powerful emotional journey that men everywhere won’t dare admit we experience. Often, today, movies that explore masculinity and the incredible burden that men often feel miss the true pressure, turmoil, fear, and loneliness that is experienced. Yet, in this film, is an example of a single representation that is unique but so sophisticated and on point that I could not look away. The burden and fears that many men must and are encouraged to bury and repress even by those that constantly tell us to be open and honest are monsters that constantly rip parts of our souls away. The loneliness for not being able to share and just let it out is a painful experience that makes one feel like they have been violated and victimized by their own soul. This movie captures so much of this in a production that is heavy on talent. If you are looking for a horror movie and macho bravado- this will disappoint. If instead, you want to see something that skims the surface of male loneliness, weight, and centuries of pressure but in a way that is more profound than most cinema or art… take a look.
- jackmeat13. ledna 2026My quick rating - 4.7/10. Descendent is one of those movies that actually reels you in with atmosphere, tough performances, and a truly creepy concept, only to utterly blow it when it counts. But for a while, it's an effective slow burn for a sci-fi/psychological thriller that knows how to get under your skin. The story centers on Sean (Ross Marquand), who is stuck in a dead-end security guard position while awaiting the arrival of his child with his pregnant partner, Andrea (Sarah Bolger). One evening while on duty, Sean notices an unusual light in the sky, falls off the roof, and finds himself in the hospital with no explanation of what actually happened. In his world, Sean’s reality begins to unravel as he suffers visions from alien creatures, nightmare sequences, and random physical changes such as his keen sense of hearing and the compulsion to draw nightmare pictures. Marquand absolutely carries this movie. If your main exposure to him has been The Walking Dead such as me, this performance should surprise you. He holds Descendent together through sheer commitment, selling Sean’s confusion and obsession as his grip on reality slowly loosens. Wisely, director Peter Cilella keeps most of his focus on Sean's internal struggle, documenting his descent through fractured dreams and increasingly tense arguments with Andrea. Bolger is also very good, keeping things in focus as a supportive spouse who slowly realizes something is deeply wrong. Her performance feels natural and believable, even as the story becomes more abstract. Visually, Descendent has some genuinely creepy moments. The alien imagery and dream sequences are frightening yet don't go too far. Nor is the uncertainty about whether Sean is dealing with real trauma or something more extraterrestrial for the most part. In fact, I think the line between what is going on has got to be one of its strongest points, as I was left guessing about everything, for the most part. Unfortunately, that's where the bottom falls out. Without getting into spoilers, the film makes choices that feel like it completely disregards the careful build-up. Any theories or emotional attachment you may have developed gets tossed in the trash and replaced with this unsatisfying ending that feels rushed and basically disconnected from the rest of the movie. It’s frustrating, especially because Descendent had done so much right up to that point. This is one of those cases where strong acting and atmosphere simply can’t save a weak script. Perhaps this was more effective on the page, but on screen, it does not land. I walked out of this feeling more annoyed than interested. Kind of a shame, given the promising start this flick had. Worth watching for the performances and mood, but don’t expect a payoff that matches the buildup.

- Kevin Wertz22. srpna 20252 hours of nothing happening
- Stella15. září 2025It's really weird. I'm not sure what the point was by the end, to be honest!
- sinrise17. srpna 2025It's well made and well acted, but there's no story and nothing happens. I would say this is a story of a man's descent into madness but all we really see is man descending into being unsettled, even disturbed, but then he's just ok in the end? I have no idea because this is another movie that just kind of ends with nothing resolved and no explanation of anything. What actually happened to him? Why is he having visions or nightmares? This will also not be answered by the movie. We don't even find out what happens to any of the characters. I suppose we are left to just figure it out but I'm not going to go rewatch it to uncover the hidden details because frankly, the whole thing is just boring. I only stuck with it because it really felt like it was building to something. It was not. I'm not sure what they were trying to say with this movie or if there's even a message at all. Is it anti-gun? Is it about mental health? Who knows?

- Monkey See! Monkey Review!!3. září 2025While a strong opening promises a compelling narrative, Descendant ultimately fails to deliver on its initial potential. TLDR -> Thumbs Down / PASS The first 20 minutes effectively establish a tense and intriguing premise, but the film quickly devolves into a repetitive cycle of scenes. The protagonist's descent into psychosis and panic attacks is a central theme, yet it's explored with such redundancy that it becomes a tedious and exhausting experience for the viewer. Instead of building tension or providing new insights, the film simply reiterates the same visual and emotional beats, leaving the audience to wonder what the core conflict truly is. Despite the hope that the final act would tie together the disparate threads and justify the meandering plot, the conclusion falls flat. It offers no satisfying resolution or explanation for the events that have unfolded. The film's initial promise of a psychological thriller or a sci-fi mystery is left unfulfilled, as it largely consists of a man experiencing self-pitying, psychotic episodes. His seemingly supernatural ability to paint prophetic pictures is introduced but never properly utilized, serving only to add to the overall sense of narrative confusion. Descendant is a frustrating example of a film that squanders a promising concept. It's not a horror, and its sci-fi elements are too underdeveloped to be meaningful. The high ratings it has received are misleading, as the movie is a hard pass for anyone looking for a cohesive and rewarding cinematic experience.
- Josh C27. srpna 2025It’s not a terrible movie, but it just never gets out of first gear. It seemed flat and not fully realized.

- dan8412428. srpna 2025Massive pacing issues lead to a rather dull watch. Sucks because I really like Marquand. But this movie was BORING.
