- Kevin WardJuly 2, 2025Sooo much of the lore in this made no sense to me that it really took me out of it. I still don’t really understand the point of the dark harvest ritual. Jack Skellington comes to town and tries to enter the church. The town boys are locked up for 3 days without food and then they’re let loose to compete to be the first to kill Jack Skelly. No girls and no “negroes” are allowed to compete (yikes). Also, using a vehicle is cheating, or maybe it’s just not fair because no one else thought of it yet. If you are the winner, you win a Cadillac and/or a trip out of town. That’s an amazing prize because leaving town is either forbidden or impossible for some reason. It also seems the adults in this town have agreed to perpetuate this ritual so that they can have moderately nice homes and classic roadsters. Also teens are all greasers and have never really questioned what happened to the previous winners of the harvest games. Still, I feel like this had potential. Half of the film looked really good. The outdoor shots in had a very cool high contrast aesthetic that almost looked like a Frank Miller comic. Sunsets and cornfields and driving scenes looked pretty stunning. Most of the interior shots though were all dark and drab and boring. There were a few really cool kills almost right smack in the middle of the movie, a body sliced in half, the top half of a head sliced off, a head pried open from the mouth. Aside from those, there weren’t any other kills of note. The ending was really anti-climactic and why did this have a mid-credit scene that really added nothing? This gets some points for some of the atmosphere and aesthetic, but the lore really had me lost.
- bioradjOctober 14, 2024The monster design is cool but the twist of the story is predictable and there are a lot of surplus characters that are hard to keep track of and don't matter to the story. It's hard to know which characters are important. Character motivations and lacks of knowledge are not logical.
