- Richardvor 4 TagenDante’s Peak is one of those movies that hit during the great 90s disaster boom, that magical era when Hollywood decided the best way to entertain us was to blow up cities, drown towns, or drop meteors on Earth every six months. And honestly, seeing it in the cinema back then was half the fun. Big screen, big explosions, big lava. Subtlety was not invited. The film itself is classic 90s disaster comfort food. Pierce Brosnan plays a volcanologist who is permanently stressed, permanently sweaty and permanently convinced the mountain is about to kill everyone. Linda Hamilton is the small town mayor who has to deal with the fact that her town’s biggest tourist attraction is about to turn into a fiery death trap. The pacing is exactly what you expect: slow build, ominous rumbling, scientists arguing, townsfolk ignoring warnings and then "BOOM"the volcano decides it’s time to ruin everyone’s day. Once the eruption hits, the movie becomes a chaotic theme park ride: lava rivers, ash clouds, collapsing bridges and that infamous “grandma in the acid lake” moment that traumatized an entire generation. What makes Dante’s Peak strangely enjoyable is that it takes itself completely seriously. No winking at the camera, no jokes about the absurdity, just pure, earnest disaster melodrama. And in the 90s, that worked. It was part of that mini wave of disaster films (Twister, Volcano, Deep Impact, Armageddon) where the formula was simple: pick a natural threat, crank up the tension and let the special effects department go wild. Is it scientifically accurate? Absolutely not. Is it entertaining? Very much so. It’s the kind of movie that feels bigger and better on a cinema screen, where the rumbling sound system makes you forget the plot holes and just enjoy the spectacle. A solid slice of 90s disaster nostalgia, dramatic, loud, occasionally ridiculous and exactly the kind of film you remember seeing in the cinema because it was made for that experience.
- Zokkiie1. Juni 2026This is exactly the kind of disaster movie I miss. No world-ending stakes, no giant CGI spectacle every five minutes, just a town slowly realizing it's in serious trouble. The movie does a great job building tension before everything kicks off, which makes the payoff much more effective. Pierce Brosnan is likable, the disaster scenes are still impressive, and some moments are way more intense than you'd expect from a volcano movie. A few characters make some unbelievably dumb decisions, and parts of it are undeniably cheesy, but it's the good kind of cheese. Just a really fun old-school disaster flick that still holds up surprisingly well.
- M08Y21. Januar 2026A pretty generic disaster movie with an excellent cast and FANTASTIC special effects. Dante's peak is, on paper, a fairly underwhelming film. Coming out at a time where disaster movies were pretty commonplace, it needed something special to stand out. To stand out from it's competition, Dante's Peak relies HEAVILY on miniatures to really bring the disaster to life and it really does look amazing. The other aspect that elevates Dante's Peak to "memorable" status is the cast. Brosnan and Hamilton are excellent here and genuinely seem to enjoy working together. The support cast are all fine and even the annoying characters are redeemed. For some reason, it took over 1 year from ordering the 4K bluray to it showing up at my house, but it was worth the wait. This might be one of my favorite discs. The special effects, being done with miniatures, lend themselves very well to the 4K treatment. Combined with a good transfer, the picture quality is truly something to behold. The audio was pretty good too. Overall an excellent 4K experience.
