An Underrated Australian Slasher That Deserves Far More Recognition I’ve never quite understood why Cut (2000) receives so little appreciation from horror aficionados. For a film that delivers some genuinely brutal kills, an interesting spin on the slasher formula and a distinctly Australian personality, it’s surprisingly overlooked. In fact, I’d argue that Cut deserves considerably more recognition than it gets. I first discovered this film when I was around 13 years old, stumbling across a copy in a Video Ezy bargain bin for approximately $3.00. I had absolutely no idea it existed, and I certainly wasn’t expecting much. What I got instead was one of the most unexpectedly entertaining horror discoveries of my teenage years. I was genuinely impressed, and that appreciation has stayed with me ever since. One of the things I particularly admire about Cut is just how unapologetically Australian it is. Featuring an impressive cast that includes Molly Ringwald, Jessica Napier and Kylie Minogue, the film showcases some terrific local talent and a distinctly Australian sense of humour. There’s a certain cheekiness to the dialogue and performances that international audiences might not entirely appreciate, but for me, it’s part of what gives the film its charm and identity. It doesn’t feel like a generic American slasher with Australian accents thrown in. And then there are the kills. This is where Cut really deserves some credit. The violence is bloody, inventive and frequently vicious, with a level of brutality that I think holds its own against some of the genre’s most celebrated franchises. Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees and Michael Myers might be the household names, but the killer in Cut certainly doesn’t disappoint when it comes to delivering the carnage. The garden shears are an inspired choice of weapon, giving the murders a particularly nasty edge, while that wonderfully sinister mask is genuinely iconic in its own right. It’s a shame that such a memorable slasher design remains relatively unknown. I also appreciate the film’s supernatural premise, which gives it a slightly different identity from the countless masked-killer films that followed the success of Scream. It might not reinvent the genre entirely, but there’s enough originality here to distinguish it from the more forgettable entries of the era. Is Cut a flawless horror film? Of course not. But since when did a slasher need to be flawless to be entertaining? What matters is whether it delivers memorable characters, an engaging premise, a distinctive killer and some satisfyingly gruesome deaths. On those fronts, I think Cut succeeds admirably. For me, this is a genuinely underrated piece of Australian horror cinema, one that deserves to be rediscovered rather than dismissed. It has personality, humour, creativity and, most importantly, absolutely no shortage of blood. A solid 7/10, and a film I’ll happily defend against its detractors.

I didn’t look at the production date of this movie before I started watching. The aesthetic made it feel like an early 90’s slasher. So I was kind of thrown when they directly referenced Scream (1996). It opens with a crew shooting a horror film called Hot Blooded, only for their killer to turn real and murder the cast. Years later, film students resurrect the cursed footage to finish the movie….and the killings resume. It leans into the post-Scream wave of self-aware horror but it isn’t nearly as meta as that suggests. Not much to write home about though…Aussie accents and Molly Ringwald, maybe.
