In 1902 Texas, thirteen-year-old Horace goes to work on old Soll's farm to earn enough money to buy a headstone for his father's grave. Unfortunately for Horace, Soll's senility, ill health, and obsession with the convict labor he uses to work the farm, make it unlikely that Horace will ever be paid the twelve dollars and fifty cents Soll owes him for six months work.

“Convicts” is about a man in total power unraveling under dementia and alcoholism, and the people forced to live inside that collapse. Robert Duvall plays that man as both villain and victim: unstable, unpredictable, at times almost childlike. That’s what makes it uncomfortable; you’re never quite sure who he is from one moment to the next. It’s uneven, but honest about showing people living with someone who is no longer fully there, in control over them.
