I went in expecting sword fights, not a masterclass in mist. Some cool visuals and weird little bursts of violence pop up, but the story wanders, the characters barely register, and the action’s usually impossible to follow. It’s got a grimy charm, but mostly it’s just tiring.

I didn’t really understand the movie. Most of the time, I was wondering why I was watching it rather than whether it was good or bad.

OK. 4 stars yes, but understand this is still an Italian genre film, so there will be trash, cheap effects, gore and sexual exploitation. But with that said this is a crazy-brilliant fantasy film that could have only been made in the 80s. The first 1/3 of the film will give you whiplash with the amount of lore and plotline thrown at you. You are not eased into this world. You crash land. Once the film finally settles, there are so many odd scenes and ideas. Considering this film steals from every 80s fantasy and caveman movie of the same decade (Quest for Fire, Clan of the Cave Bear, Conan the Barbarian, Beastmaster, and on and on). Yet, it's still wholly unique and has scenes you may be surprised to see. Ultimately, it's a gay love story and it's barely disguised which is quite brave for it's time. It's sexy, beautiful and bat-shit nuts. The images - especially the long shots - look like they're 70s prog rock record covers come alive. And for once, the movie poster and VHS images are totally in the film.
