Compulsion Ratings & Reviews
- Jacob O’NealOctober 7, 2025When Neill Marshall works outside the mainstream with a small budget he’s much better than movies with a big budget, like Doomsday (the cheap female ripoff of Escape From New York). Compulsion was not what I expected. That’s a compliment. I knew very little about this film going in. What I got was an homage to both giallo and erotic thrillers with a lesbian twist. I’m not going to get into details about the plot as there are a lot of twists and turns along the way but the basic story is as follows - a young, attractive woman goes to Malta to check on her step-father’s house. She was supposed to go with her girlfriend but came alone at the last minute. She meets her neighbors, a beautifully statuesque redhead and her sleazy boyfriend. The girls immediately strike up an interest in each other. All the while, there is a masked, leather clad woman going around Malta killing people with knives and swords. Could the young woman or the neighbors be involved? It’s a pretty run of the mill plot overall, but Marshall’s direction makes the movie pop. The performances are on par with what you’d expect from this type of film. In fact the star is the woman from 365 Days, not the greatest but great to look at and a serviceable actress. If you’re a fan Marshall and his lower budget work like Dog Soldiers or The Descent then you know he loves putting women in traditional male roles and letting them chew up the scenery as they go mad. This movie is no exception. It’s fun, sexy and has one of the most interesting kills shot in a oner I’ve seen in a long time. It’s worth the watch.
