If you understand psychology this is a great film. If you don't you'll probably be non-plussed with the interactions and open nature of it, and why other people love it. It doesn't resolve because that's how life is. For those who understand how trauma stains people and how love lingers no matter what happens and whomever else has come along. It's a lovely film with a lot of kindness throughout. Fantastic acting throughout. There is zero wrong with this film but within those who watch it. In the eye of the beholder and all that.

In its latter half the film... gradually runs out of ideas, and out of steam.
Chicago Reader
J. R. Jones
Writer-director Joshua Marston gives Shannon a chance to shine as a character more pedestrian than the ones he usually plays, though the story is a little too thesis driven to build any dramatic momentum.
St. Louis Post-Dispatch
Calvin Wilson
Despite its flaws, "Complete Unknown" raises provocative questions about the nature of identity and whether it's more a comfort or a trap.
Christian Science Monitor
Peter Rainer
Shannon is usually playing human question marks in the movies, so it's a twist here to see him playing the "normal" guy, except Shannon is too unconventional an actor to play anything in the normal range.
Philadelphia Inquirer
Steven Rea
The movie brushes up against far-fetched soap-opera scenarios. The ending isn't altogether satisfying. Yet Weisz, playful and seductive, utterly confident, disarmingly vulnerable, delivers a performance that makes you forget all that.
San Diego Reader
Matthew Lickona
Director and co-writer Joshua Marston likes to let his scenes run long; occasionally, this proves engaging (a dinner party that goes from gregarious to curious to awkward to unpleasant), but more often (an extended frog montage), it just proves long.
Boston Globe
Tom Russo
The film comes across as an irksome contrivance. What's meant to communicate the mysterious, even taboo allure of playing chameleon instead just leaves us scoffing.
Washington Post
Stephanie Merry
Even if it's not quite as thrilling as it first seems, "Complete Unknown" poses questions that practically beg for animated conversation ...
Arizona Republic
Bill Goodykoontz
Much is promised and too little is delivered.
Observer
Rex Reed
Slick and wonderful to look at but too slight to hold its own weight and too inconsequential to generate much suspense.
Seattle Times
Moira MacDonald
The film is never less than interesting. But this story of a cipher, ultimately, is a cipher itself.
Los Angeles Times
Kenneth Turan
An intriguing entertainment that's invigorated by smart filmmaking and potent acting by the virtuosic Weisz and her fine costar, Michael Shannon.
The Verge
Tasha Robinson
The film never comes up with a mission statement or a message that might tie together its wandering scenes, or explain its vague melancholy. In the end, it feels like a life-support system for a single perfect scene .
RogerEbert.com
Glenn Kenny
The movie does pretty well as a treatment of identity and selfhood, but it somehow fails to wholly satisfy.
New York Times
Andy Webster
"Complete Unknown" is a curious hybrid, teetering between a thriller and a romance only to land in a nebulous spot that is neither.
NPR
Ella Taylor
Like Alice, the film seems to be making itself up as it goes along, which would be fine with a less expository script than the one Marston wrote with Julian Sheppard, and with fewer showy gestures at the surreal.
Film Journal International
Nick Schager
Rachel Weisz is magnetic in this dreamy drama about an identity-shifting chameleon reuniting with a former flame.
Entertainment Weekly
Joey Nolfi
Complete Unknown is perhaps most titillating when it quietly observes moments between its central duo, two long-lost lovers hurling nearly two decades' worth of unresolved pain at each other over the course of a single evening.
New York Daily News
Edward Douglas
It's more than a little ironic that a film called Complete Unknown will leave you scratching your head about what you just watched.
