This isn't really the kind of movie I tend to like. Characters going through sad situations, talking, while nothing really happens. Hallmark of empty festival movies for me. But this one, I actually felt, and was interested in their struggles. Spearheaded by the great characters here. Casey has a good mix of playfulness and extreme sadness about her. We observe her in many moments of solitude, lost in torturous thought that reveals itself in her stony, hurt, expressions. Jin is a wonderful foil. A disatisfied dude, dealt emotional trauma by the man he is now practically forced to support. He's cool and conscientous, but enjoys being a bit of a dick. He too has immense sadness that only now and then bubbles to the surface. And the third star of the show is architecture. Wonderful cinematography characterizes these buildings in an almost profound light. At once you see the beauty while also being aware of how mundane it can all be if you're just passing through in your daily life. Columbus does drag some in the latter half. It doesn't have quite enough intrigue to justify its run time.

Columbus becomes a dark meditative quasi-romance, as we consider the term, "modernism with a soul."
San Francisco Chronicle
David Lewis
The quietly stirring, exquisitely photographed Columbus is an art house gem that beautifully illuminates not only the architecture of a small Indiana town, but also the characters who inhabit it.
Arizona Republic

Architecture has never been more romantic than in "Columbus," single-name director Kogonada's stunningly beautiful film.
Chicago Sun-Times
Miriam Di Nunzio
Rarely will images of mighty concrete and stone dwellings set against tranquil waters or a gentle spring shower resonate so powerfully as those on display every day in the southern Indiana city of Columbus, captured so breathtakingly in the film.
Chicago Reader

[Columbus] unfolds in a series of grandly composed frames that range from fanatically symmetrical interior shots to boldly geometric exterior shots showcasing the local gems.
Chicago Tribune

Few contemporary American films operate on this level of aesthetic precision. In a first feature, yet.
Boston Globe
Peter Keough
Kogonada in his impressive feature debut applies the principles of these architects to the compositions and structure of the film, a formal tour-de-force that eclipses its modest - though affecting and impeccably acted - narrative.
Slate

Each shot is meticulously composed without appearing mannered; the characters, often seen from a distance, make up an integral part of the landscape they occupy rather than being framed picturesquely against it.
Austin Chronicle
Marjorie Baumgarten
Columbus is an assured first feature film by Kogonada, the single-named video essayist who makes film-analysis shorts about such auteurs as Ozu, Linklater, Tarkovsky, and Malick for the Criterion Collection and Sight & Sound magazine.
Washington Post

The director's greatest strength lies in creating a mood. "Columbus" is melancholy without being morose, and talky without forced cleverness.

In its best moments, Columbus doubles as a reminder that films speak in a language all their own, and that language often cuts deeper than words.
Los Angeles Times
Justin Chang
What's remarkable about this wondrously assured debut is that technique never overwhelms feeling, in part because Kogonada makes the two seem inextricably, harmoniously linked.
Tribune News Service
Katie Walsh
Almost startling in how assured it is, synthesizing beautiful, controlled images with story and character.
Entertainment Weekly
Chris Nashawaty
Columbus is a charming and beautiful indie debut.

The depth of emotion the film stirred up surprised me. I got so involved in these two people's lives. I cared about them. I liked eavesdropping on their conversations.

A minimalist film like Columbus depends almost entirely on the shading of the characters and the depths of the performances. By that metric, it's a too-delicate creature, tickling and piquing instead of fully thrusting us into the realm of feelings.
Observer
Oliver Jones
As much as it is about architecture, the film is also a love letter to movies themselves: the sense of majesty they can capture and the strange little worlds they allow us to discover.
Rolling Stone
Peter Travers
The feature directing debut of Kogonada, the South Korean video essayist and critic, is a poetic spellbinder about two strangers bonding over modern architecture.
NPR
Mark Jenkins
Despite Richardson and Cho's assured performances, their characters, dialogue, and relationship are never fully believable.
