Centigrade Ratings & Reviews
jackmeat
December 22, 2024
My quick rating - 4,9/10. It'll make you claustrophobic, that is for sure, trapped in a snowstorm, buried on the side of the road. The movie is decent but the problem is everything you need to know is done already. You know stupid decisions make this last far longer then needed. Can't really say much without spoilers. The movie looks great (when outside of the car). I didn't care for the male lead (Vincent Piazza) and when you have all of 2 people to care about, and don't like one, that is a bad thing. What they do with it though is quite good since it is based on a true story. Makes me shake my head about that part. People are this dumb. Not bad and since it went straight to VOD, you could find worse things to watch. Just expect it to be quite slow.
Austin Chronicle
Richard Whittaker
If only the audience was as trapped as Matt and Naomi, maybe their indecision would count for more.
Third Coast Review
Steven Prokopy
Including such raw and fraying emotions in this tale elevates it in ways that are genuinely compelling and heart-wrenching.
Eye for Film
Jennie Kermode
It is a well-informed, realistic take on what it's like to survive being trapped in freezing conditions, and a reminder that this scenario is something many people have had to face.
Culture Mix
Carla Hay
This badly written and tediously paced film not only has the characters buried in snow, but the movie also buries itself in substandard nonsense.
Polygon
Robert Daniels
A creatively crafted claustrophobic study of a fractured marriage.
The Playlist

Brendan Walsh's Centigrade is crushed by an avalanche of unrealistic plot points and subpar acting.

[An impressive] debut. [Full review in Spanish]
San Antonio Current
Kiko Martinez
First-time director/co-writer Brendan Walsh keeps the drama intense enough for the first half of the film, but then the storytelling loses momentum and feels as stuck as [the characters] in their icy grave.
San Francisco Examiner
Jeffrey M. Anderson
It can't find, or perhaps has no time to find in 89 minutes, much balance or history in the relationship.
Cinemalogue
Todd Jorgenson
Within its tight narrative constraints, the immersive film captures the psychological distress of their circumstances. But all the bickering and panic elicits more pity than sympathy, leaving viewers emotionally cold.
Film Inquiry
Emily Wheeler
This chilly thriller never turns up the heat, leaving the audience with little reason to chill with the imperiled couple. It's not a disaster or a triumph. It's just...not much of anything.
Reason Online
Glenn Garvin
IFC Midnight's immersion in survivalist tedium.
The Daily Beast

...amid the tension over the pandemic and movie theaters' reopening, it's comforting that, even if a stressful watch, this film is content with traumatizing you from the safety of your own home

Forgive the crashingly obvious Shalit-level pun, but Centigrade only left me feeling cold.
Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
Piers Marchant
It is nothing short of maddening to watch them wait endlessly rather than actually take active agency toward their predicament.
Cinema76
Dan Scully
Painful to watch because the characters are unbearable, the stakes aren't well constructed, the pacing is dreadful, and no narrative arc of any kind occurs.
The Hollywood Reporter
Frank Scheck
Neither tense nor thematically resonant enough to overcome its literally small-scale aspects, Centigrade proves as much an ordeal for its viewers as its characters.

If the cold doesn't kill you, the boredom will.
CBR
Josh Bell
The movie spends nearly 90 minutes stuck in a car with these people but never really gets to know them.
