Imagine going about your day, minding your own business. The phone rings. It's a stranger, kidnaped and pleading for your help. You are her only chance... I hadn't heard about this film until recently and I can't recall it ever being on tv either, so I was unsure what to expect. It gets off to a very shaky start. It cuts from Basinger in a fairly gritty kidnap scene to Chris Evans on a beach having trouble with his valley girl ex-scenes which feel like they belong in some teen rom-com. However, the film improves as it goes on, with a better balance being developed between humor and drama and a semi-decent twisty turn plot moving on. Evans does a good job of portraying a vulnerable hero way above his head. Kim Basinger is miscast as a science teacher [ok...] but does her best. Jason Statham plays one of his few full villain rolls, and sadly doesn't show a lot of his trademark charisma, being only given a standard heavy part. William H. Macy is the best part of this film in his supporting part, adding a good deal of humor and screen presence, especially in the finale. The film reminds me of another Statham film, Chaos. Its nothing major and quickly forgettable, but its solid 90 mins entertainment.
San Francisco Chronicle

As the brand of thriller where ordinary people are in peril and forced to take extraordinary risks, Cellular is distressingly predictable and not a tad scary. But as a parody of the genre, it's a scream.
Seattle Times
Tom Keogh
A plucky thriller that also serves as a satire on today's instant- gratification phone culture.
New York Post
Megan Lehmann
Highly improbable, maniacally action-packed.
Common Sense Media
Nell Minow
So-so thriller that is too intense for tweens.
Slant Magazine
Nick Schager
It's Ellis's dedication to providing an unrelenting series of silly B-movie set pieces that makes the ridiculous Cellular ring.
MovieFreak.com
Sara Michelle Fetters
Much like writer Larry Cohen's other telephone thriller, Cellular is an exuberantly silly, more than a bit over-the-top B-movie thriller told with far more flair than it probably deserves.
Austin Chronicle
Marc Savlov
It's mad, bad nonsense of the summer, popcorn variety, disposable but oh-so-much fun to endure, a roller coaster on a wobbly cinematic track.
Houston Chronicle
Eric Harrison
Logic has nothing to do with Cellular, but it's so quick-moving and fun we don't care.
New York Daily News
Jami Bernard
There is nothing more to the movie than the usual thrills.
Village Voice
Michael Atkinson
Buoyant, pleasantly pulpy, invigorating doodle.
Salon.com
Stephanie Zacharek
The picture has a low-stakes, cop-show vitality to it; it doesn't pretend to be more than the sum of its parts.
Washington Post
Desson Thomson
Its adroit use of suspense makes you overlook the silliness.
Washington Post
Stephen Hunter
I enjoyed every one of its 89 minutes.
Detroit News
Tom Long
Comes fully charged if just a little bit silly, a wham-bam action flick with no pretense and plenty of fun.
CNN.com
Paul Clinton (CNN.com)
The true beauty of this film is how the dramatic tension builds to almost unbearable levels, only to be snapped by a bit of humor, and then over and over takes up once again.
Chicago Sun-Times
Roger Ebert
This is one of the year's best thrillers. Better than Phone Booth, for my money, and I liked that, too.
Boston Globe
Wesley Morris
A ludicrous little abduction thriller that boasts an entertaining cocktail of gunpowder, suspense, adrenaline, and cheese.
Ebert & Roeper
Richard Roeper
... ingenious.
Los Angeles Times
Kevin Thomas
Illustrates what happens when a viable premise is spoiled by sheer preposterousness.
