Great at putting the heart and thought into a tradition like baseball, balancing the emotional and physical aspects of the experience as well as the game versus the business. It understands that baseball is not just played, it’s lived, talked about, romanticized, and at times exploited. That tension is present throughout, even if it’s not always fully explored. There are some fantastic lines and extended speeches from characters that aren’t necessarily connected to each other or to any larger narrative thread. They exist almost independently, as moments meant to show that these characters are thoughtful, reflective, and aware of the world around them. While these statements can feel profound in isolation, it’s often unclear what they are trying to accomplish or say in the larger picture. Part of the film seems to suggest that baseball is life, only to undercut that idea by implying there is more to life than baseball. That push and pull is interesting, but never fully resolved. There are deeper philosophical discussions embedded in the film that could be expanded into something more substantial, but the film never commits to them. At the same time, it functions just as easily as a romantic comedy. It leans into that space without hesitation, embracing the tone and structure of something meant to entertain as much as provoke thought. It can be read as something deeper, or dismissed entirely as a product of its time, a romcom built to engage and arouse its audience. Both readings feel valid, which is part of what makes it work and part of what holds it back.

Why is it that the best baseball movies are about minor league teams? As a baseball fan, I have seen a lot of films from this genre and this one ranks near the top of my list.

Kevin Costner is the greatest sports movie maker of all time and nothing can change my mind

just a movie about minor league baseball, with ugly warts included. they curse, they spit, they yank chains. Not the movie it was made out to be to me, but if you like baseball this one is a good watch. the sex scenes kinda date it though

All those having a penchant for sports films will fall in love with Bull Durham. The animosity turned friendship moments between Kevin Costner and Tim Robbins are as genuine as they can get. Overall its a very humorous yet heartbreaking take on how sports (baseball in this case) influence and shape lives of those involved. This one kinda reminded me of another wonderful baseball film 'The rookie'.
