- Austin BurkeNovember 2, 2025Bugonia is a strange, albeit honest, examination of the human condition and a look at how trauma can dictate decision-making. At the same time, this is an often-insane dark comedy that kept me on the edge of my seat and provided one of the most fascinating experiences of the year. Lanthimos is in his bag with the visuals, cinematography, and ability to get the best out of two top-tier actors. Where we ultimately wind up will frustrate some, but the way this film approaches the journey was far more entertaining than even I expected.

Plemons and Stone bouncing off each other is pure pleasure from their deadpan volleys to the way each scene seems to tilt depending on who’s holding the power in the moment. I’m so glad I caught this in a theater, because it looks fantastic. The production design and those slightly skewed Yorgos compositions just pop on a big screen. And I loved that ending. From the moment Plemons teleports to the final shot, it’s Yorgos fully speaking my language. It’s strange, playful, and weirdly triumphant.

- Jason Layton3d agoI guess I'm not artistic enough to appreciate this because I gladly fell asleep about halfway through and have no interest in finishing this. I love Jesse Plemons which is why I found this movie way too uncomfortable to watch. He brings the crazy psychopath characters to another level.

- Bradford Wade4d agoStellar performances from everyone. Looks and sounds fantastic. Not quite as piquant/bizarre as Lanthimos' Pretty Things, this is a quirky dark comedy that deftly explores intense themes of loss, isolation, paranoia, and survival. It's gritty, gory, shocking, and tense, but also graciously peppered with comic relief. Believable characters in extreme situations. My rating system (by half-star increments): (0.5)-I'm upset this exists and demand justice (1.0)-Strongly disrecommend; no one should see this (1.5)-Actively disrecommend; nothing of value here (2.0)-Passively disrecommend; needed to bake some more, but has some elements (2.5)-Neither recommend nore disrecommend; a competent but unremarkable film (3.0)-Passively recommend; this is a good movie (3.5)-Actively recommend; you should watch this movie -->(4.0)-Strongly recommend; this is a great movie worth rewatches (4.5)-Must-see; this deserves every award (5.0)-It is important that as many people as possible watch this film
