Where to Watch Bucky Larson: Born to Be a Star
- Manuel FrangisJanuary 6, 2025I just watched Bucky Larson: Born to Be a Star, and I would give it a solid 3.5 out of 5 stars. This is one of those movies that is so ridiculous that you cannot help but laugh. It is dumb, over the top, and filled with absurd humor that is not for everyone. If you enjoy goofy, lowbrow comedies that do not take themselves seriously, you might find something to enjoy here. The story follows Bucky, a small town guy who discovers that his parents were famous adult film stars. This revelation sends him on a journey to Hollywood, where he tries to follow in their footsteps. From the very beginning, the movie makes it clear that it is not trying to be smart or clever. It is just about having fun with the most absurd situations possible. Nick Swardson plays Bucky, and his performance is exactly what you would expect. He fully commits to the role, embracing the awkwardness and cluelessness of the character. His delivery makes even the dumbest jokes funnier. The way he interacts with the other characters adds to the ridiculousness, making every scene even more over the top. The humor is very hit or miss. Some jokes land well and are genuinely funny, while others are so dumb that they either make you laugh or shake your head. If you enjoy silly, cringe humor and exaggerated physical comedy, you will probably have a good time. If you are looking for something more clever or sophisticated, this is definitely not the movie for you. The supporting cast adds a lot to the film. Christina Ricci plays the love interest, and she brings some charm to the movie. Don Johnson is surprisingly fun in his role, and there are a few other recognizable faces that make things more entertaining. Even when the jokes do not always hit, the cast does a good job keeping the energy up. One of the best things about Bucky Larson: Born to Be a Star is that it knows exactly what it is. It is not trying to be anything more than a goofy, weird comedy. It leans into its own absurdity, never apologizing for the over the top humor. That kind of commitment makes it more enjoyable if you go in with the right expectations. The pacing is a little uneven. Some scenes go on longer than they need to, while others feel rushed. The movie does not always know when to move on from a joke, which makes some parts drag. However, it never takes itself seriously enough for that to be a major problem. If you are just looking for something light and silly, it still works as an easy watch. This is not a comedy for everyone. If you do not like crude humor, awkward characters, or movies that embrace being dumb for the sake of it, you might not enjoy it. But if you like ridiculous comedies that feel like one long joke, this one has its moments. There are plenty of comedies that aim higher and deliver sharper humor, but Bucky Larson: Born to Be a Star is just here to be weird and ridiculous. It is not a must watch, but it is entertaining in its own strange way. It is not a movie I would rush to rewatch, but I had fun with it. Definitely worth checking out if you like goofy comedies that do not take themselves seriously.
