Count Dracula, a 15th-century prince, is condemned to live off the blood of the living for eternity. Young lawyer Jonathan Harker is sent to Dracula's castle to finalise a land deal, but when the Count sees a photo of Harker's fiancée, Mina, the spitting image of his dead wife, he imprisons him and sets off for London to track her down.

It’s flawed because it tries to force a novel onto the screen. Without such a good director and without Oldman/Hopkins, this movie would have been awful. It’s missing tension, suspense and fear.

Best Dracula movie ever made. Great cast led by Anthony Hopkins. I watch it once a year.

So Poetic, so theatrical, even with Keanu Reeves's dodgy accent this is an absolute masterpiece. Gary Oldman is phenomenal. The production.... my goodness, it uses every new and old effect technique you can imagine, almost to the point you can imagine it on stage. Oldschool overlays, makeup, modern creature effects, back projection, models, my goodness, what a film. It tears out your heart, as Oldman's is saved. Bravo.

This was an interesting take on the Dracula story. Some elements are totally over the top, while others feel more wooden. The pacing occasionally had me scrunching my brow into a question mark. Especially with how late Van Helsing is introduced despite narrating the whole film. Visually, Dracula is quirky in all the right ways. It leans into an almost opera-like aesthetic, backed by practical effects that genuinely stand out and give the film a distinct personality. I do question some of the casting choices, aside from Gary Oldman, who is fantastic as Dracula. Overall, it’s a strange but compelling interpretation. Not perfect, but interesting enough that I’d probably watch it again.

    NOOOO LUCY

“i want you to bring me, before nightfall, a set of postmortem knives.” “an autopsy? on lucy?” “no, no, no. not exactly. i just want to cut off her head and take out her heart.” showed my roommate this film since we recently watched that other, more recent adaptation directed by [redacted]; i had to show him what true sauce looks when it comes to filmmaking and romance in a dracula film. this movie is so sexy and romantic and stunning to look at in every moment and it makes me feel so much and so deeply. anthony hopkins’ van helsing is the funniest man alive. that’s my goat.

I had fond memories of this one from my childhood but its not aged incredibly well. The gothic melodrama doesnt quite land in any meaningful way, but isnt quite hammy enough to walk the other option either. The cast is mostly good but the performances are by the nuumbers and there are no standouts. There are some visual treats in later parts and its worth a watch for genre fans, just dont expect something seminal from Copella.

Weeeeeird movie, very stylized, not always to its favor. The practical effects are delightful, especially the shadow play. This film features several full minutes of people screaming and raving with madness. The plot moves at a brisk pace that lost me a time or two, but the story settles into tropes often enough that it's easy to get back on top of what's going on. Oldman has a grand ol time as the numerous looks of Dracula

Even the wonky acting can't bring this piece of art down! SO GOOD.

A lavish gothic halloween classic that must be seen. "Atmosphere" is a term thrown around often in critque, "dripping with atmosphere," a common enough term that we've all heard by now. This movie takes the concept of atmosphere and submerges you into the vibrant pools of blood until you are utterly drowned, coughing for air by the time the credits roll. It is a film so wonderfully unrestrained that the term "camp" feels quaint. Has there ever been a more wanton big budget film in existence? What a wonderful, beautiful bloody mess of a film. Bizarrely faithful and entirely hedonistic, Dracula is must watch cinema for the practical effects alone--if not for the wildly uneven performances delivered in such splendid breathless fashion. The flaws are what make it perfect. Bless this film. Watch this film already, you coward!

The definitive Dracula adaptation so far. Great directing, great art direction. The awesome performances of Gary Oldman and Anthony Hopkins make up for Keanu and Winona.
