Stylish chaos, relentless pacing, and raw energy from start to finish. It doesn’t slow down, and it doesn’t ask for permission. Loud, fast, and brutal. Did it hit you or miss you? 💥🔥

Effective and moving war drama, with a handful of good looking set pieces, a dance number, and even Saoirse Ronan showcasing her beautiful singing voice. Yet, it’s varying pieces ultimately feels a bit disappointing given Steve McQueen’s pedigree. Saoirse plays Rita who evacuates her son George (Elliott Heffernan) out of London to the countryside amidst the German blitzkrieg campaign during WWII. A recalcitrant George leaps off his moving train and begins a hazardous trip back to his mother. This felt like a setup for a harrowing disaster film, similar to something like The Impossible (2012), but despite the frequent air raid sirens and various close ups of bombs mid-flight, I never really felt that sense of tension or danger. The war setting is really just a backdrop to tell a mixture of other stories that highlight a variety of social issues—racism, feminism, class divide. George a black/biracial adolescent trekking through the city alone experiences all the casual racism the city has to offer and also finds himself in an Oliver Twist-like gang story. From Rita’s perspective, we see her working in a munitions factory attempting to survive the horrors of war, but we also experience some flashbacks to her life before with George’s father. It’s always compelling and even moving at times, but none of various elements really mesh together in a cohesive fashion. Still worth watching, even if it was a bit disappointing.

A straight forward film, might have easily been made by John Ford
