For all its supposed cheer, this film is actually circling something quite relatable: how the holidays can amplify comparison, envy, and that quiet suspicion that everyone else’s life is somehow going better than yours. On paper, that’s a solid idea, and the film does gesture toward a thoughtful reminder that no person or life is as perfect as it appears. In practice, though, it never really earns that insight. It’s fine as background noise — the kind of thing you half-watch while wrapping presents or scrolling your phone — and there’s undeniable comfort in seeing Brandy, Heather Graham, and Jason Biggs pop up. I like all three, and their presence does some heavy lifting. But the plot logic is where it really falls apart. I know it’s a movie, and suspension of disbelief is part of the deal, but the idea that a husband could secretly write detailed letters to his wife’s “frenemy” for over a decade without her knowing stretches credibility past breaking point. Instead of being charmingly implausible, it becomes distracting. It wants to be warm, reflective, and lightly comedic, but it ends up feeling thin and oddly frustrating. There’s a message buried in there somewhere — it just doesn’t survive the wrapping. ☕ A reheated mug of instant hot chocolate — vaguely festive, mildly comforting, and not quite as good as you hoped it would be.
