Batman Forever Ratings & Reviews

Watching this is like watching bad process art. Its numbingly incoherent, can't decide what tone it wants to be and ends up vomiting up a neon-covered mess. I love it.

🦇The third Batman film in the series, this time Batman Forever suffered a big change in direction with Warner Bros wanting to make the film more family friendly in comparison to the previous Tim Burton films. Batman Forever as a movie sadly overall suffers as a result. Visuals appear more bright colour comic book tones from green's, reds, blue hues, in comparison to the darker tones of Batman and Batman Returns. The 4K however by Warner Bros has been beautifully remastered, and Batman Forever is a real colourful delight of a presentation to watch on screen. The picture is sharp and clean and worth picking up if you want to complete your Batman collection.
Chicago Tribune
Gene Siskel
It doesn't add up to much, but it's certainly entertaining.
Entertainment Weekly
Owen Gleiberman
By now, Jim Carrey is doing sarcastic takes on his own sarcasm, and there's something funny and a little scary in that.
New York Times
Janet Maslin
The film recovers from that initial confusion to get stronger as it goes along, and to shape up as a free-form playground for its various masquerading stars.
San Francisco Chronicle
Mick LaSalle
A grand- scale effort that's more awe-inspiring than completely successful as entertainment.
Chicago Sun-Times
Roger Ebert
I liked the look of the movie and Schumacher's general irreverence toward the material. But the great Batman movie still remains to be made.
USA Today
Susan Wloszczyna
Burton went over the edge. Schumacher merely goes over the top. Result? Bigger, battier and better.
Austin Chronicle
Marc Savlov
Batman forever... and ever... and -- yawn -- ever.
CNN.com
Carol Buckland
Batman Forever is a visual tour de force, a knock-your-eyes-out effort. But it overdoes, overkills. And what starts out exhilarating ends up...exhausting.
Chicago Reader
Jonathan Rosenbaum
Joel Schumacher submits to the Wagnerian bombast with an overly busy surface, and the script by Lee and Janet Scott Batchler and Akiva Goldsman basically runs through the formula as if it's a checklist.
Variety
Brian Lowry
As for Kilmer, he gamely steps into the dual Batman/Wayne role but can't get much traction, finding, as Michael Keaton had, that beyond a stern jaw there's not much to be done with it, since the suit does most of the work.
Rolling Stone
Peter Travers
Batman Forever is in and out but wins in the end by staying true to its unbridled comic spirit.
Los Angeles Times
Kenneth Turan
This loud and boisterous comic book confidential is serviceable enough to satisfy.
Washington Post
Desson Thomson
Carrey lights up an otherwise over-scripted, over-frenetic potboiler.
Film.com
Gillian Gaar
The highs? Jim Carrey's Riddler, hands down.
Film.com
Sean P. Means
Minds in neutral, zoning out on the eye candy.
Film.com
Tom Keogh
Kilmer's good, not surprisingly, but he doesn't get to do a lot.
Antagony & Ecstasy
Tim Brayton
The gulf between the dark universe Burton's film set up and the tremendously silly camp world that [Batman Forever was] hunting for was too great to hybridise the two.
Film Frenzy
Matt Brunson
[UPDATED 2024 REVIEW] As for Two-Face, my favorite Batman baddie on the printed page, Tommy Lee Jones makes a complete mockery of the character with a broad performance that's difficult to stomach.
