- Jacob O’NealJuly 13, 2025This movie has the bones of a good werewolf film. The problem is that it feels like a couple different films mashed together. It’s like a low budget family film and an edgy werewolf movie. Michael Paré, Mariel Hemingway and Mason Gamble (Dennis The Menace) star as a brother, sister and nephew. The problem is that the uncle (Paré) is a werewolf. The problem isn’t with the acting or even the effects. It’s the story. It’s trying to be two completely different films. It wants to be a sincere family drama complete with the pathos that comes along with it. But then it still wants to be what writer/director Eric Red is known for - suspense and horror. He was unable to make these two divergent concepts mesh. The drama is good. The horror elements are good. The transformation and werewolf effects are well done. It’s just the tone being so uneven that hurts this film. It’s a shame too. It’s pretty rare we get a good werewolf movie. Sure we have An American Werewolf In London, The Wolfman (Lon Chaney Jr), Ginger Snaps and some others peppered in, but they’re usually misguided and made by people romanticizing the creatures rather than letting go fully unhinged and scary. Bad Moon wants to have it both ways and that really doesn’t work. There are two halfway decent movies in here. Yet both movies combined make it hard to watch. I guess two rights can make a wrong. If you want a good Eric Red movie that combines two genres, watch Near Dark. He wrote it and Kathryn Bigalow directed it. It’s a modern day western that just happens to revolve around vampires. He combines the concepts beautifully in that. The Hitcher played with romance and murderous obsession, but they seem to go hand in hand in movies. Go with Near Dark to see a good Eric Red movie.
- Travis BelisleMarch 17, 2025Very under rated movie. For fans of werewolf movies and dog lovers this is great. Very 90s horror which is a cliche but it sums up the vibe.
