Argo Ratings & Reviews
- seaghanAugust 22, 2025Great movie but downplays Canadian involvement and also makes it that the Iranians weren't totally justified in doing the right thing. Always has to be to from America's lens
- lauterzeroDecember 10, 2025this movie is so peak
- flavo43November 23, 2025Argo is one of those films that proves the old saying: truth can absolutely be stranger than science fiction. Instead of high-tech gadgets or thrilling shootouts, it shines a spotlight on the quieter, more creative side of espionage—the kind that relies on planning, nerve, and a bit of Hollywood magic. The idea that the CIA orchestrates coups in one office while, next door, another team is organizing an impossible rescue of American hostages using a fake movie production is both absurd and completely true. That’s what makes the story so fascinating. Ben Affleck does a great job bringing this unlikely operation to life, balancing tension, humour, and historical detail with a steady hand. The cast, including a wonderfully sardonic Alan Arkin and John Goodman, adds heart and levity without undercutting the stakes. Argo manages to be gripping, smart, and surprisingly entertaining—a testament to how remarkable real covert work can be when stripped of cliché.
- Taneem958October 22, 2025One of the best movie hollywood ever produced!
- zaqcaponeOctober 19, 2025Can’t believe this won best picture over Django Unchained. Great story and good movie but Django is miles better.
- JeffOctober 14, 2025Argo is a really fun movie that, yeah, fine, it takes liberties with the source material, sure. But it does so in the interest of making a tighter, more entertaining thing. It's thrilling in the right spots but isn't afraid to occasionally remind you of the comedy inherent to this ridiculous (but at least partially true) operation.
- mickerdooJuly 2, 2025Tense, cool and creative. Incredible true story of an outlandish idea that actually worked. Stressful. Great cast and performances.
- darsanJune 20, 2025ben affleck made a great political thriller film.
- CallumDecember 31, 2024⭐⭐⭐⭐½ – Argo – Truth, tension, and perspective Argo is a superbly crafted historical thriller that proves the old saying right: truth really can be stranger than fiction. The story itself is so improbable that if it were fully invented, you’d probably call it unrealistic — which only makes its success as a film all the more impressive. That said, it’s impossible to ignore the lens through which the story is told. The film undeniably downplays Canadian involvement and frames events almost entirely from an American perspective, while also simplifying the motivations and context of the Iranian side. That doesn’t make the film bad, but it does mean it’s a dramatised retelling rather than a balanced historical account. As with many Hollywood histories, the nuance is sacrificed in favour of narrative clarity and tension. Ben Affleck anchors the film confidently, both in front of and behind the camera. His direction is tight, focused, and increasingly assured as the film progresses, building tension steadily rather than relying on bombast. Once the operation is underway, Argo becomes relentlessly gripping, even if you already know the outcome — a hallmark of excellent filmmaking. Despite its limitations, this is still essential viewing for anyone interested in modern history, political thrillers, or true stories that feel almost unbelievable. Just watch it with an awareness of what’s been emphasised — and what’s been left on the cutting-room floor. 🥃 Drink Pairing A classic Old Fashioned — restrained, purposeful, and quietly intense. A drink that reflects control under pressure rather than flash or excess.
