Apollo 10½: A Space Age Childhood Ratings & Reviews
Kevin Ward

A gigantic feel good cup of nostalgia from Richard Linklater. Linklater is a master at capturing the vibe of a particular time and place in his films, in this instance 1960’s Houston during the space race. I’m not a big fan of the rotoscoping animation from his other films A Scanner Darkly and Waking Life, but I actually thought it worked rather exceptionally here. The imagery is crisp and clean and not as loose and wavy as the aforementioned films. It has an imaginative fantastical element weaved into the narrative, but otherwise it’s a pretty simple slice of life / coming of age drama. That nostalgia though is a helluva drug and it gets me almost every time.
Entertainment Weekly
Leah Greenblatt
It's all lulling and immersive and surprisingly lovely, a sweetly unhurried ode to a bygone world.
Newsday
Robert Levin
In its unhurried fashion, amid its nostalgic staples, Linklater's movie finds its way toward something that for Stan is even more consequential than a journey to another world: the beginning of the rest of his life.

I often felt as if I were looking at my own childhood through a long and distant lens.
New York Magazine/Vulture
Alison Willmore
It feels, for the first time from Linklater, like a lecture about how things were better back then.
Houston Chronicle
Craig Hlavaty
With "Apollo 10½," Linklater invites us into his childhood for 97 minutes, and we ache with him for a time that was perhaps only simple on the surface.
Christian Science Monitor
Peter Rainer
Apollo 10½ is a portrait of innocence untainted by any agenda other than the need to convey as honestly as possible what it felt like to be that particular boy at that particular moment in history.
RogerEbert.com
Matt Zoller Seitz
Linklater presents Stan's story in a drolly convincing as well as affectionate manner, with a fanciful tone that rarely shades over into cuteness, and visually assured direction.
Fox 10 Phoenix
Caroline Siede
"Apollo 10½" does at times feel like an older relative monologuing at you about every minute detail from their childhood - from what they ate for dinner to what they watched on TV ... But that myopia is also part of its charm.
Associated Press
Lindsey Bahr
This doesn't push many boundaries. And yet as with most Linklater joints, it's so sincere and so sweetly true that you can't really fault it for not reinventing the wheel.
New York Times
A.O. Scott
"Apollo 10½" may not be working with the freshest material - "The Wonder Years" popped wheelies and played kickball on similar generational turf - but it's a lively and charming stroll down memory lane all the same.
CNN.com
Brian Lowry
It's a gauzy indulgence in nostalgia that sweetly captures a very specific time and place, which should broadly speak to Linklater's contemporaries.
The Reveal (Substack)
Scott Tobias
The cumulative effect is to paint a vivid and frequently hilarious scrapbook of this specific time and place.

Enchantingly improbable yet unerringly exact...
Observer
Oliver Jones
Whereas for virtually any other director nostalgia is a surefire way to suck the life out of the room, Linklater uses it to inject vitality.
Rolling Stone
David Fear
It exits as a tribute to imagination, which -- like so many of Linklater's best movies -- uses something personal as a jumping-off point for something poignant, funny, expansive, and ultimately moving.
Slant Magazine
Keith Watson
Apollo 10 ultimately suggests that memory distorts and amplifies just as much as it preserves.
The New Yorker
Richard Brody
This intricate story of personal and collective memory evokes, above all, the roots of a filmmaker's imagination.

Linklater's version of Fellinis Amarcord or Woody Allens Radio Days: an essentially plotless but engaging and enriching recollection of childhood steeped in warmth, grace, honesty, and crystalline specificity.
