Anne of the Trails

Directed by William Bowman
1913    11mShort, Drama
Although she keeps herself above her environment, Anne Morgan's father uses her as "half" in his gambling den. One day she plays cards with Al Brent. She plays a straight game, much to her father's disgust, and Brent wins. Morgan angrily takes her place and wins all of Brent's money by cheating. Ashamed of her father, Anne accuses him; a fight ensues. Though mortally wounded, Morgan makes his getaway with Anne and they finally find their way to a mountain cabin where they are both welcomed by Norwood. Morgan dies shortly afterwards and Norwood proposes to Anne and she accepts. All goes well until the day Brent happens into town and encounters Norwood, who is filling his pipe from a pouch that had belonged to Anne before her marriage; Brent recognizes it as his and tells Norwood. Norwood attacks him, then rushes home to his wife and asks her if it is true; if she was the "woman of the town saloon." Her silence makes him think it is true and he rushes out of the cabin to leave her. Finding out what he has done, Brent goes to Norwood's cabin and finds Anne lying senseless on the floor. He summons a doctor and they restore her to consciousness. Norwood turns back and once more comes to his shack, where he is convinced by both Brent and the doctor that his wife is not the kind of woman he had suspected and no better woman ever lived. Norwood asks his wife's forgiveness and their happiness is complete in the advent of their firstborn.
