He was a day laborer, and generally regarded as a good shoveler, although not a fancy shoveler. His wages were $l.25 a day, but he was happy because he had a beautiful daughter, an old foul-smelling pipe and a goat. One day fortune came to him unexpectedly, and he gave up his work, trying to be happy while his daughter was making an attack upon the fortress of society. The poor girl had a hard time, because her father insisted upon keeping the goat, and the animal was not at his ease during social functions. For a time father, by having his goat, got his daughter's figurative goat, and the happy family was on the verge of disruption. The old man may have been a joke at afternoon teas, but be was diplomatic in his way, and won the girl over by reminding her of her childhood days. So she yielded to the inevitable, and the goat climbed the social ladder with them.
