Breaks my heart everytime. Well done regardless of its history. Being able to introduce heavy topics to children isn’t something to be done lightly and this film did a respectable job of doing it. The era of these kinds of films being allowed to be released is gone but I’m grateful to have been a part of it.
Detroit Free Press
Martin F. Kohn
Having Burt Reynolds sing wasn't the only unfortunate move director Don Bluth made in "All Dogs." The worst, by far, was coming up with a story that 5-year-olds will find scary and impenetrable.
Boston Phoenix
Robin Dougherty
What kills the movie is its poorly imagined plot. Ann Marie's hapless situation has been made up entirely so Charlie can become a hero -- and there's no chemistry between them.
Cleveland Plain Dealer
Joanna Connors
It's hard to tell just who Don Bluth and company had in mind with this wayward animated feature. It manages to violate just about every rule of family films, beginning with its essential cynicism.
Salt Lake Tribune
Terry Orme
While not the triumph The Little Mermaid is, All Dogs Go to Heaven has much to recommend it. The film is a visual delight.
St. Louis Post-Dispatch
Harper Barnes
This darkness seem to work against the lightweight nature of the story. I don't think Bluth intended this to be as gloomy a movie as his earlier The Secret of NIMH.
Fort Worth Star-Telegram/DFW.com
Michael H. Price
Emotional punch, memorable character design and animation, a richly detailed narrative, a delightfully shadowy visual sense and sharp cultural perceptions -- all distinguish All Dogs Go to Heaven, the Don Bluth team's best all-around achievement.
Minneapolis Star Tribune
Jeff Strickler
Disney's adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Mermaid puts up a respectable fight. But in the end, better attention to detail, pacing of the story and use of voice talent tip the scales in Bluth's favor.
Bay Area Reporter
Steve Warren
Aside from the songs it's pretty well done, but it's not in a class with An American Tail.
Rochester Democrat and Chronicle
Jack Garner
While adequate, the plot is secondary to the humorous sight gags, vigorous, rich cartoon style, memorable characterizations, and musical numbers.
The Daily Gazette (Schenectady, NY)
Dan DiNicola
A film with technical expertise, it resembles one which might have been written as an afterthought by people who can draw better than they can write. The story is leaden and overworked, perfunctory and predictable.
Orlando Sentinel
Jay Boyar
The plot meanders and chases its own tail without ever establishing coherent characters.
Los Angeles Times
Peter Rainer
In "All Dogs Go to Heaven," the possible is the mundane.
Associated Press
Dolores Barclay
''All Dogs Go to Heaven'' will never be an animated classic, such as ''Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs'' or ''Bambi,'' but it is enjoyable entertainment for the entire family.
Common Sense Media
M. Faust
A barking romp too intense for younger children.
Antagony & Ecstasy
Tim Brayton
Don Bluth's second outright triumph; a film whose burial in the last 20 years is nothing short of a crime.
Video-Reviewmaster.com
Steve Crum
Cute family fare in the Don Bluth tradition.
New York Times
Janet Maslin
The plotting, which is best when kept simple in a film for very young viewers, is so unfocused and overcomplicated that it becomes difficult to follow.
Chicago Sun-Times
Roger Ebert
Technicolor is back with an improved color system, and in All Dogs Go to Heaven it permits such a voluptuous use of color that the movie is an invigorating bath for the eyes.
Washington Post
Rita Kempley
Reynolds surely has a bone to pick with his woofish alter ego, who has all the actor's swagger but little of his diffident charm.
