Its biggest problem is that it feels like chapter one with no chapter two. That makes the movie feel incomplete, like a prelude for a conclusion we never got.

- flavo43November 22, 2025Manga adaptations going live-action are usually Japan’s domain, so when Hollywood announced Alita: Battle Angel, I’ll admit there was a definite cringe instinct. Surprisingly, I think this one turned out to be a genuinely great film. It captures the spirit of the source material with a detailed, lived-in cyberpunk world, impressive effects, and energetic, crunchy action scenes that made it easy to watch—three times, in my case. Alita’s oversized eyes were undeniably creepy the first time around, but by the third viewing they’d completely grown on me, adding to her otherworldly charm rather than distracting from it. The supporting cast helps sell Iron City as a real place, and Alita’s journey from amnesiac innocent to determined warrior is genuinely engaging. It all left me hungry for more of her story. Maybe we’ll finally get that sequel in 2029? Here’s hoping.

- RichardOctober 5, 2025The movie dazzled me in 4K, but my first encounter with Alita was on a worn VHS tape and that memory still holds weight. The 2019 film is a visual juggernaut and it is like stepping into a cyberpunk theme park. But the original 1993 anime OVA? That was raw, compact and emotionally piercing in a different way. I remember the grain of the VHS, the slightly warped audio, and the way the story hit harder because it didn’t over explain. The animation was gritty, the violence unflinching and the tone far darker. The movie covers roughly the same arc as the OVA, Ido finding Alita, her bounty hunter awakening, the doomed romance, but it adds layers from the manga and modernizes the pacing. It’s more accessible, more emotionally rounded, but also more Hollywood. So yes, the film is impressive. But that VHS tape? That was my gateway. It didn’t have Dolby Atmos or a million dollar budget, but it had soul, grit and the kind of storytelling that sticks with you long after the credits roll.
