After Earth is one of those not-really-well-done movies that I still find myself returning to every five years or so. The story concept is cool, and I enjoy the life-or-death situations the movie delivers, but the acting is pretty lackluster. It felt like our boy Will underacted on purpose to avoid outshining his not-so-talented son. There are good ideas here, and the survival elements are enough to keep me interested, but the execution never really reaches the level the concept deserved. Still, for whatever reason, I keep coming back to it. Rating Breakdown: Story / Plot: 3/10 Acting / Voice Acting: 3/10 Characters: 5/10 Visuals / Cinematography: 8/10 Pacing: 6/10 Entertainment Value: 4/10 Sound / Music: 6/10 Rewatchability: 3/10 Sci-Fi / Audience Appeal: 6/10 Overall Rating: 4/10

½⭐ – After Earth — A Misfire That Never Recovers After Earth is one of those films where it’s hard to know where to begin, mostly because nothing about it really works. I’m only giving it a half star because I need to rate it that high to be able to review it at all. The story is lifeless, the dialogue is wooden, and the emotional core is completely missing. I’ve heard it described as a thinly veiled Scientology advert; I don’t know enough about Scientology to confirm that, but if it is meant to be promotional, it’s the worst possible version. Whatever message it’s trying to send, it lands with a dull thud and actively repels interest rather than inspiring it. This was clearly intended as a vehicle to launch Jaden Smith into action-star territory, with Will Smith hovering nearby in a mentor role. Unfortunately, the attempt backfires spectacularly. Jaden isn’t ready to carry a film of this scale, and Will Smith — usually magnetic — feels strangely disengaged. Instead of a passing-the-torch moment, it plays like a misjudged vanity project. There’s expensive-looking sci-fi scenery, but none of it matters because the film never earns your attention. The pacing drags, the stakes feel artificial, and by the time it ends you’re left wondering how something with this budget, this cast, and this ambition managed to be so thoroughly inert. My advice is simple: watching it once is already two times too many. ☕ Pairing: A cold cup of tea you forgot about — unpleasant, disappointing, and a reminder that some things are better left unfinished.

Went in with very low expectations and I had a good time. Good sci-fi movie.

Best line in the movie, "I want to work with mom". No surprises, you know everything that's going to happen, but it still held my interest.

Very different and the storyline is great, the acting is fantastic but there was something missing it seemed to be on a straight line instead of up and downs as most top movies have, suspense wasn't enough maybe, but it was lacking something. There is some thrills and spills with a lot of imagination so don't despair it's not a complete wipeout it will survive. Now to the story. The space shuttle goes down after going through a meteor shower and there are only two survivors, because the commander is injured it leaves his son to go and get help, someone must reach the other part of the shuttle and grab the beckon and start it and wait to be rescued. Want more well there is more to the show but I'm not telling you, as not to spoil it entirely. I still brought the movie as it's unusual and I like a mixture in my library. I rated this an A grade for keeping me entertained with the special effects and the things that were added to help keep the movie alive. A show that will keep you amused for the first time but not the second time round. At my age we forget so that's why I have it. With nothing better to do, run down and collect the movie and on the way back don't forget the popcorn relax with feet up as everybody has a different opinion yours and mine might not match so be a judge and see for yourself. Enjoy!
