Ace Ventura: Pet Detective
Directed by Tom Shadyac- ርልዪረJanuary 31, 2025🕵🏻♂️🦜🦎🐾🦝🐢🐇🐕 I remember loving this film as a kid and into my teenager years. The craziness, the toilet humour, the sexual innuendo - everything a teenager could want! But truth be told, my appreciation of Jim Carrey has wained over the years. Maybe I'm more mature, maybe I've seen funnier actors I don't know... But I saw a double Blu-ray set with When Nature Calls recently so thought I'd give it a go. The film isn't as crazy as I remember which is actually a good thing - it was still absurd but it was smartly done and the craziness was second to the story. One of my favourite scenes was the shark tank, where Carrey as Ventura thinks he has found the kidnapped dolphin but instead tangles with a shark. It's funny but also a bit of a fright. Final Verdict: A perfect vehicle to showcase Carrey's talents. It's not my favourite Carrey film but it's enjoyable and has some smart jokes and a decent amount of mystery. The actual laughs arn't as big as what you will find in the sequel but overall it's a better film
- RichardOctober 19, 2025I saw this one in the cinema when it came out and it was unlike anything I’d seen before. Jim Carrey exploded onto the screen like a cartoon character let loose in a live action world. Later grabbed it on DVD and yes, it’s one of those I’ve rewatched enough to quote half the script. Ace Ventura is a pet detective, yes, that’s a job, who’s hired to find a missing dolphin mascot just before the Super Bowl. The plot is pure nonsense, but it’s the kind of nonsense that works when the lead is this unhinged. Carrey’s physical comedy is off the charts: talking with his butt, sliding across floors and contorting his face like rubber. It’s juvenile, loud and completely committed. The film is packed with dated references, Miami Dolphins lore and a twist ending that’s… let’s say problematic by today’s standards. But back then? It was outrageous and unforgettable. I loved the crazy idea and execution. It felt like someone gave a Looney Tune a badge and let him loose in Florida.
- Walter Jospeh KovacsAugust 10, 2025Carrey is a really talented individual. He does actually offer a lot of depth to his acting (The Truman Show) and is an intriguing character (Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond) but everybody needs to start somewhere and although by no means his debut film, Ace Ventura is where he really became popular in the 90s. I've watched some of his early stand up some stuff as well. He really is a master of physical comedy and his facial expressions are superb. He makes this movie. Of course, there are many scenes that aren't PC in retrospect but on the whole this was superb light-hearted family entertainment. I'm too biased by nostalgia to objectively claim this is still funny - it probably isn't - but I found in mildly entertaining again in 2025.
