Nishiyama (Atsumi) is the only one to survive in his platoon in WWII Japan. After the war is over, he begins a long voyage of 8 years throughout Japan to deliver 12 letters left by his fellow soldiers to their respective families and is appalled to discover his mates have been all but forgotten by their ex-wives and families.
