It hits a lot of familiar beats, but that doesn’t mean the emotional beats have any less impact. It’s a moving story of perseverance and sacrifice that’s given a massive assist from Rosa Salazar as Jose’s irresistibly charming wife and partner. I’m more and more impressed with Salazar after each new role. An enjoyable and inspiring biopic.

It illustrates how hard work, perseverance, and dogged stubbornness can push past barriers, and can be as important as natural talent when striving to achieve your dreams. This is a tale about great family values, parents who might not be perfect, but truly do the best they can for their children. It is about unwavering family support and unbreakable family bonds. It is a great example of how improving the fate of one family member can produce a cascading effect that improves the lot of each member of the family. It also makes it clear that racism does exist in America, but that it can be overcome by proving your individual worth, thereby opening the doors to other minority races in the future. Mostly this is a tale about never giving up and never letting dreams die.
