A Haunting in Venice Ratings & Reviews
- StephenJuly 5, 2025The best of the three Branagh's Agatha Christie films. This followed by Orient Express and lastly Death on the Nile and at the box office.
- Kevin WardJuly 2, 2025I think this is easily my favorite of the three Kenneth Branagh/Hercule Poirot mysteries. Poirot is tasked with investigating whether the tragic occurrences of a particular residence in Venice can be traced to supernatural occurrences or is there something else afoot. I really loved this setup. Its almost more like a Scooby-Doo mystery (compliment). Shot on location, the setting and scenery look really stunning. Even though the film is largely contained within this single palazzo, we’re treated to some gorgeous establishing shots of the Venetian rooftops, canals and alleyways. But the palazzo interior, too, was equal parts beautiful and haunting. Branagh’s cast is, once again, excellently assembled even if it doesn’t have quite as much star power. What I liked most about this entry, was that I felt like this was the first time Branagh has given the audience all of the pieces to actually solve the mystery on their own. The best part of a good whodunit is trying to solve the mystery on your own and so far A Haunting in Venice has done the best job of laying the evidence out, not making the culprit too obvious, but also not making it so profoundly obscured that only Poirot himself would be able to solve it. My kids and I had a really fun time. The theater had a couple people dressed in cloaks, Venetian masks and carrying lanterns which created a fun ambience. If you’re hoping for lots of spooky horror elements, you’ll likely be disappointed. Sure, there are a couple jump scare moments, but beyond that, it’s truly not very spooky at all.
