A Boy and His Dog
Directed by L.Q. Jones- GrimeFiVideo26 December 2025The story feels a bit directionless at times, but the acting, sets, and world-building are absolutely great. It's a post-apocalyptic film that is funny, entertainting, and brutal; highlighting how warped morality can become when living in such a harsh environment. A Boy and His Dog isn't a cinematic masterpiece, but it is absolutely influencial to the post-apocalyptic sci-fi genre. It's a film that is an easy choice to have on my rewatch playlist.
- flavo4328 November 2025A Boy and His Dog is a bizarre, darkly comedic, and surprisingly thoughtful entry in the post-apocalyptic genre, one that could only have emerged from the filmmaking landscape of the 1970s. Centered on a teenage boy and his telepathic, sardonic dog wandering a ruined wasteland in search of food, shelter, and—yes—sex, the film openly embraces its controversial tone. But within that provocation lies a sharp commentary on the collapse of societal norms, and how morality shifts when civilization disappears. Its anti-war, anti-establishment streak is unmistakably ’70s, capturing the era’s cynicism and distrust while world-building a wasteland both absurd and unsettling. What truly anchors the film is the relationship between the boy and his dog: codependent, loyal, sarcastic, and oddly tender. Their dynamic gives the movie an emotional core amid the madness. I loved the film for its unapologetic weirdness, its creative vision, and its bleakly humorous take on survival in a world gone feral.
- Michael Surber9 November 2025Don Johnson and a talking dog. I wish I had been in on the pitch meeting for this one. I saw this at the drive in back in 1975 or 76 and was not prepared for this crazy, apocolyptic film. Decent but nothing spectacular. Still, it's a far cry from this role to the captain of The Odyssey. But not much.
- dughlasu8 February 2025I've heard about this film. I watched 15 minutes of it. It's made in 1975 and set in 2024. I'm reviewing it in 2025. It's childish and is really a kids film. There's just so much about even the 15 minutes I watched to say it is better left in the past and isn't worth watching today. It belongs in the niche film collection of dystopian post apocalypse fiction but this is low budget, poor quality sets and acting. Not a high quality gem. Why it is set for an audience of 18 years compared with modern films is oddly amusing. How they made it stretch for 1.5 hours I don't know. I cracked after 15 minutes and pulled the eject from cockpit lever.
