Masterpiece. Dark, creepy, great backstory (high school football star). Sam J is stunningly good, as always.

Pretty engaging for a slow burn. Interesting ending that leaves you wanting more. Really like the design around Elijah. And David's poncho.

I think this gets better after every rewatch. One of Bruce Willis’s best performances. I was kind of bummed that M Night fumbled the bag a bit with Glass, but that still doesn’t detract from this masterpiece.

A Subtle and Unique Superhero Story "Unbreakable" is a slow-burning, atmospheric thriller that takes a unique and grounded approach to the superhero genre. M. Night Shyamalan crafts a story that feels more like a psychological drama than a traditional comic book movie, focusing on character depth and emotional weight rather than spectacle. The film's methodical pacing and muted tone set it apart, making for an intriguing but divisive experience. Bruce Willis delivers a restrained yet compelling performance as David Dunn, portraying his character's quiet struggle with a sense of purpose and identity. Samuel L. Jackson, on the other hand, brings a captivating intensity to his role, adding layers of mystery and philosophical weight to the film's central themes. Their dynamic is what truly drives the narrative, creating a fascinating exploration of strength, destiny, and belief. Shyamalan's direction is meticulous, with carefully framed shots and a deliberate, almost hypnotic storytelling style. The muted color palette and minimalistic score further enhance the film's introspective and eerie atmosphere. However, while these elements contribute to its uniqueness, they also slow the pacing, which may test the patience of some viewers. Although "Unbreakable" is an intelligent and refreshing take on superhero mythology, it doesn't quite reach the level of emotional or narrative impact that it aims for. Some moments feel drawn out, and the film's quiet nature may leave some viewers wanting more momentum. That said, its originality, strong performances, and thought-provoking themes make it a worthwhile watch.

If you want your movies fast-paced and filled with un plausible action, this is not the movie for you. This movie moves slowly, like a molasses tidal wave and carries you along a seemingly meaningless path. Bruce Willis plays an ordinary man, with an ordinary job, and an ordinary family - which is almost background noise in his dull, plodding life until the unexpected happens. He emerges from a horrific train crash - the only survivor, with not a scratch on him. This garners the attention of a very eccentric character played by Samuel Jackson, but why he is interested is what the plot circles around. Slowly the movie reveals its point, but not in a flamboyant way. M. Knight certainly has his detractors, but his style is unmistakable as it swirls and envelops the story, dancing agonizingly around plot points like a book with missing pages, but it all adds up in the end. This is not a movie for everyone - but if it hooks you, you’ll bathe in it’s simple premise, and want to watch it again once you know its secrets.

Takes a little while to kick in, but once it does, it really grabs you. Unbreakable keeps things low-key, focusing on mood, tension, and the characters instead of flashy action. Bruce Willis is perfectly chill, Samuel L. Jackson is oddly magnetic, and the visuals and music make the whole thing feel super atmospheric. The slow pace actually works, letting it all sink in. Not perfect, but definitely sticks with you

This is a truly fantastic film. It’s a psychological thriller that presents the origin story of a superhero. All his life David Dunn (Bruce Willis) has been ‘gifted’. But he’s reluctantly suppressed his abilities, especially as his wife abhors the harms that can result from risky physical activity. And so David lives a quiet, normal life … feeling depressed and unfulfilled. Then one day he miraculously survives a horrific train crash. All other 131 passengers are killed, but he’s completely unharmed. This gets the attention of Elijah Price (Samuel L. Jackson) who has been desperately searching for someone who is super-human. Elijah suffers from a rare genetic condition (brittle bone disease) that causes him to be extremely fragile. And Elijah believes that if there are some people who break easily, or who get sick often, then – at the opposite end of the spectrum – there might be a few people who can’t be injured and don’t get ill. The question is, is David unbreakable? This is a superbly made film, concerned with the search for purpose in life. David initially dismisses Elijah’s beliefs, yet then strives to become the hero, and to save people from harm. While Elijah, so desperate to find purpose in his own existence, has turned to terrorism – causing the deaths of hundreds … simply to find one man who couldn’t be harmed. Just as David has discovered his reason for being, so Elijah has found his – to be a villain. This movie is brilliantly directed by M. Night Shyamalan, and well-acted (especially by Willis). The musical score thoroughly enhances the dark and foreboding feelings expressed in the story, as the characters seek to understand themselves. And the use of comic books as a central motif, for exploring the complexities of good and evil - of how each requires the other - is excellently utilised. It’s strange to be presented a superhero origin story that literally ends just as the hero realises who and what he is. But by allowing the time, and giving the space, to focus on the slow emergence of the hero so we’re offered an in-depth narrative on the tragedy, torment and personal cost involved in accepting one’s destiny in selfless heroism. And this film succeeds in a way that few others do in presenting the hero as a real man, with emotions, heartache, and disbelief. This is a complex film, presenting what is for the most part a downbeat storyline; yet the final act is emotionally uplifting. From the moment David Dunn accepts his fate as a superhero, there is a sense of spiritual awakening: he is utterly focused on confronting evil, proving himself to be unbreakable. In this way, the film is one of the finest superhero movies ever made. Fortunately, the writer-director has now made a sequel, Split (Blu-ray + Digital Download) [2017], which further develops the supernatural quality of the storyline. And the third instalment, “Glass”, is to be released in 2019. I highly recommend this movie. It’s a sophisticated piece of film-making, and one which elevates the superhero genre.

The build-up is very slow it's the first film in a trilogy. I didn't like it very much but if you're going to watch the rest of them you have to watch this one first. The order: Unbreakable (2000) Split (2016) Glass (2019)

The concept could’ve been so much, but aside from a couple good scenes, there are so many baffling decisions in regard to direction and dialogue. I don’t think there was a single character I related to or even thought they made generally rational decisions, to the point that I was shocked when people were excited when this got rolled into a franchise with a superior movie.

At 2x speed the character talk at almost a normal cadence but still say little of anything. M Night's directing and the filmography is great but this movie goes nowhere and says little to nothing. So much padding, pointless pausing, over 20 minutes spent on whether he has ever been sick before was painful to watch. If this wasn't directed this way or had the twist it'd be a whole lot of nothing.
